Abstract
Water quality standard of Phosphorus, which is a nutrient limiting factor for the eutrophication, has been strengthened. For following this regulated concentration, most of the public sewage treatment facilities have advanced treatment technology, but in order to achieve water quality standards, additional chemical treatments are carried out. In order to overcome these limitations, new advanced wastewater treatment system is required. Wastewater treatment system applying microalage can achieve more effective nutrient removal because microalgae has higher nutrient absorption ability than bacteria. Additionally microalgae can produce oxygen by photosynthesis and Surplus biomass has the advantage that it can be used as bio-fuel. The A2O process, which treats the largest amount of wastewater in Korea, induces the luxury uptake of PAO (Phosphorus Accumulating Organisms) through the conversion of anaerobic-aerobic condition and can remove phosphorus by wasting the high phosphorus containing microorganisms. However, when the nitrate in return sludge is getting into anaerobic tank, the reduction of the reducing power of the anaerobic tank causes an inhibition of the phosphorus release, which results in the inhibition of the phosphorus removal efficiency. When the microalgae were applied to A2O process, various types of nitrogen such as urea, nitrate and ammonium could be used in the metabolism of microalgae, so that inhibition of phosphorus removal by nitrate flux could be minimized. In this study, the probabiltiy of biological phosphorus removal were evaluated through luxury-uptake process for cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. which is known to synthesize PHB similar to PAO. If Synechococcus sp. can remove excess phosphorus by the same mechanism as PAO, it could be expected to produce synergistic effect on phosphorus removal through photosynthesis metabolism as well as luxury uptake due to anaerobic-aerobic conversion. So, the phosphorus removal efficiency were evaluated depending on the electron acceptor supplying method, an aeration condition and a condition using oxygen generated by light irradiation, respectively. It was confirmed that phosphorus release by Synechococcus sp. are occurred in anaerobic condition. However, when the electron acceptor was supplied only aeration method, phosphorus uptake decreased compared to the control condition. In addition, when the aerobic condition through light irradiation, phosphorus removal ability was similar to the Control condition. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the anaerobic condition composition for 3 hours does not inhibit or enhance phosphorus removal efficiency of Synechococcus sp. Synechococcus sp. is a mixotrophic microorganism that can utilize organic carbon as well as inorganic carbon. In order to synthesize PHB, it is necessary to convert outside cell carbon into Acetyl CoA. It is expected that the release and removal efficiency of phosphorus will be different according to Acetyl CoA synthesis mechanism. However, both inorganic and organic carbon conditions showed the same removal ability as the Control condition. Synechococcus sp. was shown to release phosphorus by exposure to anaerobic-aerobic conditions, but there was no significant difference in terms of total phosphorus removal rate. Therefore, application of Synechococcus sp. in order to remove phosphorus through anaerobic-aerobic method is proven to be inappropriate.
