The purpose of this research is to find out how group art therapy affects the emotional expression and interpersonal relationship of the elderly who has mild dementia. The specific research questions are as follows; First, how does group art therapy affects the expression of emotions of the elderly? Second, how does group art therapy affect the improvement of interpersonal skills of the elderly with mild dementia? Third, how do the emotional expression and interpersonal relationship of the elderly change in the process of group art therapy? The research was conducted by selecting 13 elderly people with mild dementia, recommended by social workers of N-Day Care Center located in Seoul. The subjects are aged 65 or older with dementia grade 4th to 5th, using the center. It was conducted with seven experimental and six control groups, respectively. The experimental group was treated with a group art therapy related to emotional expression and interpersonal relationships for 12 sessions, 60 minutes a week, and the control groups was treated nothing. One of the used research tools is the adaption of Shin Hyun-kyun and Won Ho-taek (1997), who modified the 20-Item Alexithymia Scale; TAS-20 produced by Bagby, Parker and Taylor (1997). And the other research tool is an interpersonal ability measurement method developed by Schlein and Guerney (1971), which was modified by Moon Sun-mo (1980) and adapted again by Jin Suk-gyun (1994). The collected data were analyzed using SPS 22.0, Mann–Whitney U test was performed before the using it to verify homogeneity between the experimental and control groups. In addition, the Wilcoxon Signed Bank Test was performed for comparative analysis of effect by the group art therapy after using SPS 22.0. Also, the session was analyzed to examine the changes in interpersonal relationship and the emotional expression of the elderly people with mild dementia during the implementation of the group art therapy program to the experimental group. The results of this study are as follows; First, the group art therapy program has made statistically significant changes in the expression of emotions of the elderly with mild dementia. Among the three factors in the sub-criterion; 'Defects of Emotional Identification', 'Emotional Expression and Defects of Communication' showed significant differences, while 'Externally Intended Thought' showed no significant differences. The difference in scores before and after the group art therapy in the 'Defects of Economic Identification' scale showed a statistically significant change (z=-2.01, p<.05). The difference in scores before and after the group art therapy performed on the 'Emotional Expression' ('Defects of Communication') scale also showed significant changes (z=-2.39, p<.05). 'Externally Intended Thought' showed no statistically significant changes, but positive changes in the scale. Second, the group art therapy program has made a significant change in the interpersonal relationship of the elderly with mild Dementia. 'The Entire Interpersonal Relationship' scale is a significantly changed (z = - 2.37, p <. 05). Among the three factors in the sub-criterion, 'Communication' (z=-2.38, p<.05), 'Confidence and Intimacy' (z=-2.38, p<.05) showed statistically significant results. And 'Satisfaction' showed positive changes in scores, although it was statistically not significant changes. Third, the group art therapy give the elderly people with mild dementia qualitative changes by the process of group art therapy. They engaged in activities aimed at expressing their feelings and improving interpersonal skills at each session, and said truthful and diverse conversations between the group members. Through it, they activate self-expression and naturally express negative, positive feelings. And through the program, they formed amicable, active interpersonal relationships through their awareness of the others with the awareness of themselves. The research is meaningful in verifying that group art therapy programs can have a positive impact on the emotional expression and interpersonal relationships of the elderly people with mild dementia. And it is also meaningful that based on these results, the research provided useful informations on how to effect the emotional expression of them, to change in interpersonal relationships of them.
