I began to study religious phenomenology to answer the question 'What is the meaning of religious spaces among various spaces that we experience? How can we explain the existence of God with space?" Religious phenomenology is a theory which explores the essential structure of religion. Religious scholar Mircea Eliade said that the concept of 'Sacred' and 'Profane' can be interpreted through 'prototype' and 'system' through 'hierophany'. Based on theological theory, Christian architecture contains spatial forms which can be specified by programs and characteristics. 'Prototype' and 'system' appearing in Christian architecture are related to 'phenomenon' and 'form' with which we analyze spaces. The purpose of this study is to conduct in-depth analysis on the relationship between proportional order and visual perception of light phenomena appearing in Christian architectural spaces. Christian architecture has suggested diverse ways in which man can coexist with God through different styles in each era. 'Proportion' is one of the architectural principles which have existed in Western architecture since ancient times. This concept which sublimates forms and spaces into ‘architectural beauty’ is reflected in Christian architecture, explaining how God's creative ability embodies transcendent spatial beauty. This study applies the contents of forms, spaces and light in Rudolf Arnheim's visual perception theory to Christian architecture and transforms them into keywords of spatial analysis, and analyzes the process in which all the forms become spaces through proportion and dimension. Through process of evolution starting from golden ratio, Le Corbusier, who introduced 'modular', created architectural forms of proportion and dimension. While Le Corbusier created partial two-dimensional forms, Dom Hans van der Laan established two-dimensional proportion through plastic number and converted space into three-dimensional volume, reflecting them in his projects. Aldo van Eyck also applied proportion to Christian architectural projects through golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence. Light makes it possible to recognize the forms of architecture in a space. In addition, as a medium of delivering spatial emotion, light can work as an important factor in analyzing religious architecture. Using light in various ways and focusing on formativeness, Le Corbusier embodied structures full of freedom and symbols. In contrast, Dom Hans van der Laan accurately contained the absoluteness of God in proportion. He established formative spaces like mathematical formulas and even controlled the light of nature in strict and abstinent manner. Influenced by Dom Hans van der Laan about the norms to be observed in the religious spaces, Aldo van Eyck, who is placed between the two architects in terms of light and proportional representation, embodied dramatic light phenomena in spaces that hit balance between human and God. In conclusion, proportional order of space and light phenomena in Christian architecture pursue the essence of religion and experience of divinity. The form of space and light are embodied through visual perception and the Christian architectural spaces have standards and values which do not change as places to meet God, and the synesthetic elements lead to divinity through imagery.
Author of this study hopes that, through this study, theory of proportion and principles of spatial experience which have been accumulated from ancient times can be used as data to analyze Christian architecture of various eras.
