Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have been extensively developed as an important component for future display applications. However, they are typically fabricated using multistep methods employing vacuum process. In addition, the ECDs have several issues such as poor chemical and environmental stability and electrolytes leakage, limiting their widespread uses in real applications. Here we report a facile and efficient strategy to prepare electrochromic devices based on MMA gel electrolytes through an ultraviolet curing approach. A MMA gel based ECD shows low-voltage operation (1.2 V), large optical transmittance variation (ΔT = 49.7 % at 550 nm), fast switching times (1.7 s (bleaching)/1.5 s (coloring)), and good environmental stability under wide range of working temperature (- 20 ~ + 70 °C). Specifically, only 10 minutes of polymerization time was necessary for optimum viscosity and device performance. Coloring and bleaching accomplished within a few seconds at 1.2 and 0 V biases, respectively, with a high contrast ratio (CR) of 49.7 %. Also, the device also exhibited excellent long-term and thermal stability. Using our ECDs, we demonstrated smart ECD system that can simultaneously monitor sun light and ultraviolet levels in the open air. As such, the color change of the ECD can be utilized to display the environmental information.
