Sangdong deposit is a world class W- Mo skarn deposits located in Southern part of Taebaeksan basin. It consists of strata-bound orebodies hosted by interbedded limestone of the Myobong formation and massive limestone of the Pungchon formation from Cambrian-Ordovician Joseon Supergroup. The early prograde skarn consist of early wollastonite-garnet-clinopyroxene zones, located in the outermost of orebody, and pyroxene-garnet zones, formed by replacement of wollastonite-garnet-clinopyroxene zones. The late retrograde skarns occurred by replacement of prograde skarns. Amphibole-biotite zones occurred by replacement of pyroxene-garnet zones, and these are replaced by quartz-mica zones. Finally, vein stage occurred as quartz vein crosscutting these skarns. The scheelite mineralization is associated with spatial and temporal distribution of skarn zones. The contents of scheelite is most poor in outermost wollastonite-garnet-pyroxene zones, whereas it is most enriched in central quartz-mica zones and vein stage. In this study, we estimate the skarn evolution and physicochemical conditions through petrological, mineralogical and isotopic chemistry evidence of Sangdong deposit, and represent the characteristic of the giant W-Mo mineralization. The Cretaceous Sangdong granite, associated with the W-Mo mineralization, intruded the Precambrian basement and located under ca. 1km from the surface. It shows the characteristic of highly evolved, calc-alkaline and reduced S-type granite. The occurrence of fluorite, negative Eu anomaly of skarns and the occurrence of muscovite and wolframite in retrograde II stage and vein stage indicate the ore-forming fluid has high fluorine activity and results in the greisenization effect of Sangdong deposit. The stage of skarn evolution consists of prograde I, prograde II, retrograde I, retrograde II skarn stages and vein stage. Prograde I stage consists of anhydrous skarn minerals such as wollastonite, early garnet (Ad10-99) and clinopyroxene (Hd1-85), and they are replaced to late garnet (Ad5-9Alm11-23Sps14-35) and pyroxene (Hd65-98) in prograde II stage. Retrograde skarn stages are formed by replacement of prograde skarn stages, and that is subdivided to retrograde I stage and retrograde II stage. Retrograde I stage consists of the hydrous minerals such as amphibole, biotite, epidote and vesuvianite with pyrrhotite, magnetite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite as a sulphide minerals. These are replaced by biotite, chlorite and muscovite from retrograde II stage with sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, arseonpyrite, sphalerite, galena, marcasite and large amount of quartz. At the last vein stage, early W-vein stage bearing scheelite-wolframite quartz vein and late Mo-vein stage bearing molybdenite quartz vein are occurred and crosscut previous prograde and retrograde skarns. Scheelite, major tungsten bearing mineral, has growth zoning pattern based on the contents of molybdenum affected by oxidation environment. The molybdenum contents are most variable in prograde I stage, whereas scheelite from vein stage has most poor molybdenum content without growth zoning. It suggest the redox environment of Sangdong deposit has been changed from oxidized to reduced condition. The composition variation of clinopyroxene and garnet from prograde skarns also indicates the mineralization environment was changed from early oxidized condition to late reduced condition. The evolution trend estimated from the skarn mineral assemblage, carbon-oxygen isotope covariation, and arsenopyrite geothermometer suggest that skarn mineralization was occurred from at the temperature of 400 ℃-600 ℃ (prograde I skarn) to 300 ℃-400 ℃ (retrograde II skarn) under open system with XCO2 = 0.1. There are some factors that contributed to the giant W-Mo mineralization of Sangdong deposit. The ore-forming fluid occurred from Sangdong granite flowed into interbedded limestone from Myobong formation along northeast-southwest striking fault system of Taebaeksan basin, repeatedly, and induced overlapped skarn zones from early prograde stage to final vein stage. The Myobong slate blocked the escape of ore-forming fluids to the surface, and induced the fluid flows along the intercalated limestone layers. The high fluorine activity of ore-forming fluid enhanced the ability of hydrothermal fluid to transport and concentrate ore minerals with skarn mineralization and greisenization.
