This research investigated the viability of using an in-situ permeable reactive barrier to remove multispecies heavy metals and non-metals from the acid mine drainage and contaminated groundwater. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of using a reactive material composed of a mixture of zero-valent iron and locally available pumice to treat acid mine drainage and contaminated groundwater. For comparison purposes, single reactive material (pumice and zero-valent iron) were used. In this experimental study, synthesized water composed of zinc, manganese, iron, aluminium and arsenic ions was prepared and fed into a vertical column reactor filled with the reactive materials. Three column reactors were used, and they contained pumice, zero-valent iron and zero-valent iron: pumice mixture. The vertical column reactor was fitted with several sampling ports from which treated water were sampled. Daily discharge from the reactor was taken and recorded, the concentration of the heavy metals analysed. In addition, the structural properties (porosity, crystal structure, functional groups) of the reactive material were analysed at the end of the experimental period. This experiment was conducted for a period of 90 days and showed that the Experimental research showed that a mixture of zero-valent iron and pumice showed excellent removal efficiency of 100% for all heavy metals, excellent reaction capacity, continuous hydraulic conductivity of 0.09 cm/s and low resistance because of the combination of mechanisms present in singular materials. The hydraulic conductivity of the reactor was maintained at 0.09 cm/s from the initial value of 0.19 cm/s. Pumice has a superb porous structure capable of adsorbing 100% arsenic and 100% iron ions while zero-valent iron has excellent reduction capacity for heavy metals used in the experiment. Therefore a combination of these characteristics in the mixture facilitated a continuous and effective removal of heavy metals from the wastewater. On the other hand, singular reactive material exhibited limitations in the treatment process. Pumice alone could adsorb 100% of arsenic and iron ions while heavy metals precipitated in the initial stages of the column reactor thanks to the reduction capacity of iron thereby causing clogging: clogging phenomena were regularly observed. Results also showed that the majority of the contaminants were eliminated within the first section of the reactor (i.e. within the first 20 cm of the reactor) and that the other reactive material towards the exit chute exhibited properties (i.e. crystal structure) similar to unused reactive material. Daily discharge values from each reactor showed that the column reactor with a mixture of zero-valent iron and pumice had a stable discharge flowrate of treated water than the reactor with zero-valent iron and could be attributed to the porous structure created by the presence of pumice. Based on the advantages of using a mixture of reactive material, a model for treating contaminated groundwater and acid mine drainage was proposed which consists of a set of cascade/sequential reactor modules made up of a mixture of materials. This model could be used to selectively treat multispecies contaminated groundwater and acid mine drainage with minimal loss in porosity, hydraulic conductivity and reactive/adsorption capacity. The overall costs of setting up a permeable reactive barrier (with mixed reactive material) is relatively lower than that of a conventional ‘pump and treat’ technology which is used in the Republic of Korea.
