Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of the group counseling program utilizing narrative therapy on self-esteem, stress response, and insight for alcoholics. Methods: The study design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest non-synchronized design. The participants recruited sixty-three alcoholics who were at a closed ward in D city, which was carried out from January 14, 2019 to March 9, 2019. To test the influence of group counseling program utilizing narrative therapy, the participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group (32) and a control group (31). The group counseling program utilizing narrative therapy was provided to the experimental group twice a week, for 4 weeks, 50 minutes per each session. The used instruments included a self-esteem scale, a stress response inventory, and an insight scale. Data were analyzed using X2-test, Fisher’s exact probability test and t-test with the SPSS version 18.0 program. Results: After attending the group counseling program utilizing narrative therapy, significant differences were found in self-esteem(t=4.63, p<.001), stress response(t=-5.30, p<.001), and insight scores(t=5.90, p<.001) between the experimental group and the control group . Conclusion: The results indicate that the Group counseling program utilizing narrative therapy enhances self-esteem, insight and reduces stress response of alcoholics. Therefore, this program could be a good strategy that mental health nurses can use for both re-socialization of alcoholics and prevention of recurrence for alcoholism.
