Even though the crime rate of people with mental illness is lower than that of non-clinical people, and the lack of evidence on the link between crime and mental illness, mass media has made overly exaggerated and inappropriate reports of criminal offenders with mental illness. Such press behavior can lead to reinforced social stigma about patients with schizophrenia among the general public. This study measured social distance toward people with schizophrenia by the 400 non-clinical participants who have no problem reading and understanding the questionnaire in an online survey. Further, the factors affecting social distance were investigated. General characteristics such as gender, age, level of education, economy status and the existence of family member receiving psychiatric treatment, fear of crime caused by people with schizophrenia, knowledge level related to schizophrenia, exposure in mass media about criminal offenders with schizophrenia, and social distance from people with schizophrenia were measured, and correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were performed. The average difference in social distance was larger in females (t=2.702, p<0.01), older adults (F=2.416, p<0.05), and those who did not have a family member receiving psychiatric treatment (t=-3.021, p<0.01), than the other control variables. Lower knowledge about schizophrenia (p<0.01) and higher exposure of mass media (p<0.01) about people with schizophrenia tended to increase social distance. However, fear of crime did not have a significant effect on the social distance scale. To narrow the social distance toward patients with schizophrenia among the general public, it is important that the mass media have a role in raising the level of knowledge related to schizophrenia. Therefore, information offered by the internet news or the bulletin boards in online communities should be strengthened as a useful tool, by providing the public with more prudent and more accurate content, which could reduce the social stigma toward people with schizophrenia, instead of focusing the public's attention on provocative and sensational articles.
