This study deals with the hostile imaginations of the North Korean People's Army and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in the Korean War, which was created by the Government of the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Army. Previous studies on the Korean War have been mainly conducted from the political and social point of view. These studies are noteworthy in that they provide an analysis of war participants' behavior and cognition, but didn't take into consideration the propaganda and agitation campaign. Some other related studies have examined propaganda strategies of the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Army in the Korean War, but they didn't consider how hostile targets were made or specify the North Korean People's Army and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. Some previous studies featuring the similar content and theme dealt with the time period before the outbreak of the Korean War. These critical minds need to study regarding how hostile targets were created in the Korean War. This paper aims to research the process of making up hostile targets, based on American propaganda leaflets, as well as newspapers and literary works of those times published in the Republic of Korea. Documents from both countries show differences in subject and format, but have similar representing strategies. According to those historical materials, the hostile imaginations of the North Korean People's Army and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in the Korean War is able to be summarized as follows. They were represented as puppet armies run by the Soviet Union. More specifically, the two military forces were described as being armed with Soviet-made weapons and operated under the command of the Soviet Union for the realization of ‘Soviet imperialism’. In the process, both armies were downgraded to the sacrifices to the Soviet Union, and ended up being considered as puppets from slightly different times. This can be seen in the propaganda leaflets, which advertised that the North Korean People's Army became subjugated not only to the Soviet Union but also to the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, after the Chinese forces entry into war, saying railroads in North Korea were occupied by the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. Referring to both armies as puppet troops like aforementioned was meant to expel them from the nation. However, some people still recognized them common ethnic group. The Republic of Korea and the U.S. Army, therefore, invented the armies' inhumane nature afterwards. The made-up inhumane nature of those armies was about causing damage to both human and material resources. Human damage included family breakdown, death threats, and massacres of both civilians and soldiers, while the loss of material resources was expressed as plundering war goods and destroying public offices. The damage was demonstrated with quantity estimation, as well as visual imaginations. This propaganda campaign was to justify the death of those military forces. In order to prove the legitimacy, rumors saying the two armies were visited with punishment circulated; film screenings were held to provoke public outrage about them; and the viewpoint of humanity, liberty, and peace was introduced. As a result, throwing a hostile imaginations on the North Korean People's Army and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in the Korean War was a cultural and political project to expel them from the nation and humanity, purpose of denying the characteristic of modern state of two countries, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and China. This is the historical and political implication associated with the representation of the North Korean People's Army and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, which was led by the Government of the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
