The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics, namely the period, location, number of people, toys and the purpose of traditional play for children, based on genre paintings of the late Joseon(1637-1910) and the Qing Dynasty(1636-1912). This study aims to gain insights into the play in today's society by analyzing the play in the traditional societies in Korean and Chinese culture. In addition, it seeks to understand the play culture in Korea and China by reviewing the commonalities and differences of traditional play characteristics between the two countries. The research questions set for this study are as follows.
1. What are the characteristics of children's traditional play in Korean Chinese genre paintings? 1-1. What are the periods of traditional play? 1-2. What are the locations of traditional play? 1-3. How many participants are in traditional play? 1-4. What toys are used in traditional play? 1-5. What are the purposes of traditional play?
The following research methods were conducted for this study. First, in order to collect the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty, 15 books (ten from Korea, five from China) were selected out of the 265 books in which genre paintings were contained. Then, 172 pieces of genre paintings (69 pieces in the late Joseon Dynasty and 103 in the Qing Dynasty) were chosen from the selected books for analysis. Second, the framework was constructed to analyze the characteristics of traditional play with reference to previous studies on traditional play. Third, the paintings were grouped into similar categories after determining the final selection of the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty according to the analysis framework. Fourth, the final categories were determined after deriving the classifications and key words by cross-checking the characteristics of traditional play in the late Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty grouped in the same area. Lastly, in order to secure the credibility and validity of the study, individual analysis of each genre painting, classification, and synthesis were repeated in Hermeneutics circle. The research was reviewed by an early childhood education professor and two doctoral candidates who have experiences in relevant analysis throughout the process.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, in terms of the play period, the children in paintings planned and carried out spontaneous plays according to the change in seasons, such as spring, summer, autumn, and winter, as diverse as the various natural environments of late Joseon and Qing Dynasty. Also, children grew up in the recurring seasonal customs of the time. Second, as a result of examining the play location, the children in the late Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty played in open places like indoors, courtyards, town squares as well as in the nature. However, there was a difference that distinguished the two countries, the boys depicted in the late Joseon genre paintings played mainly in town squares while those from the Qing Dynasty were often drawn in courtyards. Third, based on the analysis of the number of people participating in the play, children in the late Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty enjoyed meeting and playing together with the people of various ages like peers, parents, and villagers. Unlike the late Joseon Dynasty, however, the paintings from the Qing Dynasty depicted girls taking part in the play of the boys as well as grown women participating in play. Fourth, after studying the toys of traditional plays, it can be concluded that the children in the late Joseon and Qing Dynasty made their own bodies as playgrounds with no specific toy. They played by using their bodies without any play tool, but with a toy they could play even more creatively. Children found appropriate toys in an alley ornature by themselves, or built up a game by interacting with animals that are readily available in the surroundings, such as 'dogs', 'birds', 'cows', and the like. Moreover, for the children's play, grown-ups made various toys with familiar materials. The toy making of the grown-ups is considerate care for the children's play. It can also be seen as a way to show their support. Fifth, from the purpose of play aspect, the children's play in the late Joseon and the Qing dynasty was mostly play for the sake of play itself. Children could experience victory or defeat, coincidence, accomplishment, and so on while playing in person or indirectly. People in traditional societies without any medical advances turned to perform diverse magical or shamanistic plays in ceremonial rites for children or families to wish for happiness and protection from evil spirits. Also, they were awed by the power of nature since harvest was solely dependent on the whim of nature, hence they played in a ceremony with the purpose of praying for the rich harvest to the spirits controlling the nature.
