A study on Korean Children’s and Youth’s Science Fiction since 2000s in the view of Eco-feminism원문보기

From an eco-feminism perspective, this thesis aims to present a new direction for development of Korean SF for children and young adults by examining the types of objectification and the patterns of attempt to restore relationship revealed in Korean SF for children and young adults since the 2000s and by analyzing the meaning of interdependent symbiosis revealed in the works. At first, I look into the implications related to Korean SF works for children and young adults since the 2000s, with an overview of the theory of eco-feminism. Based on this, I prepare a standard for analyzing works and look into the types of objectification and the patterns of attempt to restore relationship. It also analyzes works Korean SF for children and young adults since the 2000s, and look up the specific application of the analysis eco-feminism perspective set by this study. By understanding the meaning of interdependent symbiosis, what eco-feminism pursuits, the reason for ‘now, here’ revealed in current Korean Childrens’ and Youths’ SF works are intended to be a step forward. As a result, the types of objectification can be divided into destruction of ‘environment’, tooling of ‘machine’ and control over ‘child and adolescent’. Works that reveal only one type of objectification has many schematic good -and- evil structures and simple subject delivery, while works whose objectification types overlap each other tend to deal with the subject in depth through complex structures and rich narrative. Depending on the patterns of attempt to restore the relativity of the subject, there can be three categories ; stand-alone, sympathetic and solidarity. While stand-alone and sympathetic figures have often shown failure to recover their relationship, solidarity figures have successfully recovered their relationship, revealing the meaning of interdependent symbiosis. Most of the works focus on stand-alone and sympathetic characters, and only two are solidarity. To find out the meaning of interdependent symbiosis, analyze Your world written by Choi yang-sun, Syncher written by Bae mijoo, and Robot star written by Lee hyun through the specific application of the analysis eco-feminism perspective set by this study. Your world has paradoxically delivered a distinct theme, showing that Xio, a stand-alone character, has failed to become a self-reliance through relational recovery, but reveals the limits of being trapped in the framework of a dualistic good and evil structure. Also, while Xio, a male teenager, grows up self-reliance, Tanya, a female teenager, shows contradictions depicted as a sacrificial tool-like being to help Xio’s growth. In case of Syncher, it effectively shows the process of children who were objectified becoming self-reliant and restoring relationship through Syncher, a sympathetic community. It is especially meaningful as it presents a new female leader model called Syncher. But failing to self-reliance at the social level and relying on Khan’s supernatural power, revealing the limits of the sympathetic community, and the holy Amazon also shows contradictions that are objectified by Syncher. On the other hand, Robot star shows a solidarity community of great significance in terms of eco-feminism. It also clearly conveys the meaning of interdependent symbiosis as the three female child robots succeed in self-reliance at both personal and social levels through the restoration of relationship in the solidarity community and move on to the Ecotopia. SF should be free to imagine various possibilities and be able to ask pioneering questions about what subjectivity and attitude humans should live with in the future. Currently, however, Korean SF for children and young adults still tends to be conservative and negatively depicts the development of science and technology. Most works also emphasize ‘humanity’ and objectify other beings. We need to face up to the reality that the concept of human being itself is being dismantled in the midst of a wave of postmodernism, and break the stereotype that we think humans are superior ones. Hopefully, the SF of Korean children and young adults will be able to ask new questions to future generations with more boundless imagination.
