In this thesis, the effects of the crystal defects and the chemical composition of AlCoCrFeNi-based high-entropy alloys (HEAs) on their deformation behaviors and mechanical properties are systematically investigated. Based on the results, a new class of high-entropy alloy was designed to exhibit the optimal combination of specific strength and ductility. First, the effects of the grain boundaries on the yield strength and ductility were examined for CoCrCuFeNi HEAs by comparing experimental measurements with the Hall–Petch relationship. When the evolution of grain size and yield strength was investigated in nanocrystalline CoCrCuFeNi HEAs produced via powder metallurgy (P/M) after heat treatment, it was found that the grain size and strength were changed from 59 to 386 nm and 1930 to 833 MPa, respectively. According to the Hall–Petch relationship, the strengthening effect of grain refinement is enhanced in the HEAs because additional shear stress to move dislocations is required in the HEAs because of the more severe lattice distortion compared to those of pure metals. Moreover, the plastic strain to failure increased from 8% to 25% owing to the lattice dislocation slip. Secondly, the composition of the HEAs was modified by the addition of lighter metals (e.g., Al and Ti) to examine the evolution of the density and mechanical properties in Al0.5CoCrCuFeNiTix HEAs. When the Ti content (x) of the alloys increased from 0 to 2, their density was reduced from 7.7 to 6.7 g/cm3 and yield strength significantly increased from 2047 to 2877 MPa, respectively. The formation of TiC instead of carbide resulted in an enhancement in the strengthening effect by grain refinement, wherein the grain boundaries were pinned by the fine precipitates. Thus, the specific strength was enhanced in HEAs containing lighter metals. Thirdly, the effect of the stacking fault energy (SFE) on the deformation behavior was studied in AlCoCrFeNi-based multicomponent alloys. A series of AlCoCrFeNi-based alloys was found to contain face-centered cubic (FCC) phases regardless of the composition, whereas a sigma phase was observed in alloys with high concentrations of Cr. Moreover, the nanoindentation hardness tended to increase with increase in the Co content and decrease in the Ni content. Analysis of the microstructural observation after plastic deformation revealed that the deformation behavior ranged from dislocation slip, SF, deformation twinning and/or phase transformation depending on the SFE of the multicomponent alloys, which was determined by the composition. Therefore, the modification of the composition led to a reduction in the SFE, triggering deformation twinning and phase transformation from the metastable phases. Consequently, the optimal composition of the HEA was determined to be Al0.5Co1.5Cr1Cu0.5Fe1Ni0.5Ti1 based on the investigation of the compositional effects on the stable phase and deformation behavior. The newly developed Al0.5Co1.5Cr1Cu0.5Fe1Ni0.5Ti1 HEA formed a solid solution phase with a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, as well as fine Ti carbide. The addition of Al and Ti resulted in weight reduction, and the density was measured to be 6.8 g/cm3. Even though the compressive yield strength of the alloy decreased from 2172 to 1353 MPa after heat treatment at 1000 ℃ for 72 h, the newly developed HEA was found to have a specific strength greater than 0.199 MPa/kg∙m 3, and the fracture strain increased from 9.12% to 18.29%. Compared to the various AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs, the newly developed Al0.5Co1.5Cr1Cu0.5Fe1Ni0.5Ti1 alloy shows remarkable specific strengths and fracture strains. Moreover, the strain hardening effects were significantly enhanced compared to those of CoCrCuFeNi alloys because of the activation of deformation twinning. In summary, in this thesis, I discuss the possibility of developing of lightweight AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs with superior strength and ductility for use as lightweight structural materials.
