The purpose of this study was to examine how the furniture in small residential spaces can be one of the solutions to use the limited room more spaciously and suggest ways to design the furniture for smaller-house architecture today. Depending on the size of the house, the different approaches to the furniture should be adopted for a better life. The relations between architecture and furniture can be emphasized when the room is smaller. Many designers have studied human factors to make human-sized and simple furniture. The use of spatial components as a part of furniture can also create more room for people's activities. Furthermore, the role of furniture becomes more important as the space narrows, which means that there is a higher probability that the primary function of furniture will accompany two or more purposes of use. The design elements of furniture for space efficiency can be defined by two concepts; the size and the arrangement and five inferior factors. The size factor in terms of spatial components includes two inferior design elements, which are the minimal designs and multi-functional and multi-uses design. The configuration factor in terms of its performance includes three inferior design elements, which are the use of the elements of spatial composition, the furniture defining the meaning of space, and the layout of furniture affecting the human behavior. By summarizing the study as a whole, furniture and space are the components in the living system. None of them can work alone so that it needs to be in good harmony. Therefore, furniture for small spaces needs to be designed by considering the aspect of space efficiency and human behavior. I navigated the relations among the elements in a space and suggests the designing points that would apply to furniture for small spaces. However, this study was conducted in a qualitative way so that the factors need to be proved by applying them into the real furniture making process for the future works. Another potential problem is that the scope of my thesis may be too broad. It seems that the in-depth research on the users to ensure the specific needs of the smaller houses and the furniture.
