In the modern era, the development of media and new technology frees expression of architectural space and the expression of epidermis through materials has become an important element of design. Unlike before, modern architects have pursued a direction that takes into account the relationship between human beings, the environment, space, and so on. Building the relationship between architectural space and environment with human beings was the domain of boundaries, and it was approached in various forms, and the perception of boundaries gradually collapsed, and the perception of boundaries within and outside forms of space and architecture became blurred. Thus, modern architects are making various physical attempts at bounded surfaces to break away from previous internal and external conventions of relativity. Boundaries in modern architecture are not simply working as physical elements, but are meant as places where two areas exist in a superior relationship. These boundaries are defined as areas that appear from the observer's perception and consciousness. Through cognitive differences, the boundaries of boundaries are strengthened, and these effects can be shown to be linked to various architectural representations such as programs of architectural space, physical epidermis, etc. and can have a decisive effect on spatial boundaries.
Thus, in this paper, through the architectural meaning and the characteristics that appear in the architectural expression of Herzog & de Muron, we try to analyze the characteristics of the inner and outer spatial boundaries. Identify the nature of various architectural approach presentation methods and physical characteristics, and establish the characteristics of boundary aspects. Its purpose is to present future modern architecture so as to break down spatial boundaries and contribute to creative expression and architectural identity.
This study examines the concept of boundary by grasping the concept and function of spatial boundary and the flow of components. It then analyzes the architectural background, ideas and features of Herzog & DeMuron, and organizes the concept of physicality and the expressive properties of minimalist material, which are their characteristic elements. Based on this, keywords were derived by categorizing them into three characteristics of expression in architecture representing spatial boundaries.
Based on the spatial boundary characteristics of the three chapters derived from Chapter 3, the case is analyzed on behalf of the architectural case of Herzog & de Muron. Thus, the subject of analysis in this paper is to analyze the spatial boundaries of the works by selecting 13 works from 1993 to 2017, which have recently been completed, based on their architectural collection EL CROQUIS, focusing on Herzog & De Muron.
First, the expression of sensibility over time was reflected in the spatial boundary by projected into the architectural space by natural factors and materials of transparency that represented the passage of time, which is the result of the visual expansion and simultaneously distortion of the spatial boundary according to various time changes. Second, spatial boundary phenomena, which are caused by visual and visual representations due to the mixture of materials and the use of non-materials such as image abstraction materials through artistic access, were shown to have various visual experiences, resulting in visual confounding and distinct boundaries of cognitive domains, making the space, architecture and environment seem to be an independent entity, and the boundary was consciously separated. Third, the method of expressing constructivity through various approaches, such as visual multi-direction, materials in the surrounding environment, and construction of the land, could be seen as a structure system in which the spatial boundaries are interrelated and activated organically.
As a result, it was confirmed through this study that the boundaries of modern architectural space can be analyzed through the perspective of Herzog & De Muron's architectural expression. Exploring the expressions of modern architecture, one can see that the previous passive approaches are emboldened and connected with the interior, giving a lot of influences such as culture, hands-on experiences, and emotional exchanges. As such, the physical boundaries of mine and outside are becoming increasingly blurred, perceiving continuity and sharing, and trying to overcome limitations from matter can tell the new zeitgeist of architecture. Today, as the perception of materialistic view of architecture continues to crumble, the expression of architectural space through various expressive approaches and the development of boundaries is to present various forms of space, to transform, to explore design possibilities that interact with the environment, human and architectural, and to find meaning in this paper.
