For primates, including humans, reliable and fast visual stimuli recognition is essential for survival. A vital category of stimuli includes those formed by the actions of other individuals, and understanding these actions is necessary for social organization. Similar to most animal species, humans learn by imitation, which is a faculty forming a basic of human culture. The mirror neuron mechanism plays important roles in action understanding and imitation. Of several existing mirror neuron models, the recurrent network with parametric bias (RNN-PB) is adopted in this dissertation for applying our proposed framework to fake emotion and drowsy driver detection scenarios. Discriminating between genuine and fake emotion is difficult as it contrasts with typical facial expression recognition that classifies the emotional state expressed by a given facial stimulus. The detection of fake emotions is useful in assessing the performance of a movie actor or judging the truthfulness of a suspect. This study utilizes the SASE-FE dataset to analyse cues for deception while controlling for the emotional status of a subject. This work also presents a new system for the detection of drowsy drivers, which is a non-trivial task because the process requires accurate and constant monitoring of facial states and head poses. Popular methods, such as the active shape or active appearance models, utilize face models that lead to reduced performance when the driver's head is in an extreme pose or if the illumination varies abruptly. This dissertation uses the NTHU Drowsy Driver dataset, which contains numerous driving videos of 22 subjects collected under various conditions. A new model that combines mirror neuron modelling with a deep recurrent network is proposed to tackle these issues since the given dataset consists of time-varying videos. In this model, features are extracted in the spatial-temporal domain from visual stimuli and simplified to provide two parametric bias (PB) vectors. These features are used to train spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) based network for the classification purpose. The performance of this system outperforms state-of-the-art fake emotion detection as well as drowsiness detection systems, demonstrating that a brain-inspired model, instead of a conventional machine learning-based model, can be a leading candidate for real-world applications.
