The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of musical activities on the mental health of senior individuals in an aging society centering around depression and quality of life.
Subjects of this study were twenty seniors, all seventy to eighty years of age. They were divided into two group with ten people in the experiemental group to which musical education was given, and the other ten in the control group to which no musical education was given. Survey on physical health, depression, and quality of life was conducted afterwards in addition to the one-on-one interview that was given to five individuals that were randomly selected from the experimental group.
According to the analysis of the survey, the control group showed statistically significant higher depression level at 6.3(p=.004) in comparison to the experimental group’s 1.3 out of 15 maximum points. Quality of life showed similar, statistically significant results, with the experimental group scoring 47.9 points out of 60 in comparison to the control group’s 38.8 points(p=.001).
Moreover, individuals who received individual interview showed positive changes in their physical state, satisfaction, socialization, and optimistic mood. As the subjects of the study generally showed good physical health across both groups, in determining or affecting a group’s level of depression and quality of life, difference in physical health was excluded.
Therefore, evidence put forward by this study proves that there is a positive correlation between musical activities and the mental health of senior citizens
