This study aims to develop and validate a measure designed to predict the process and performance of group counseling. To that end, four studies were carried out. First, the preliminary study examined literature and interviewed experts and research subjects so as to arrange the working alliance concept in group counseling and to explore the working alliance composition concept in group counseling. Through literature examination and interviews, four sub-factors were assumed as the relationship with the group, the relationship with the leader, spontaneity, and participation, and preliminary questions were made. Then, after five-time verification of validity, the factors were revised into three factors (emotional bond, task-oriented agreement, and participation for goal). Second, the preliminary survey (N=203) conducted the item discrimination analysis and exploratory factor analysis so as to derive three sub-factors. Based on the three derived factors, a measure consisting of 21 questions was developed through the final analysis of questions. The three factors assumed as a result of preliminary study are the same, but to let them represent the selected questions, the factor names were revised into emotional bond, agreement for goal, and group process participation. Third, in this survey, the confirmatory analysis of the factor structure of the final measure and the analysis of validity vs. the reference variable were conducted, targeting 241 members of the group. As a result, a good fitness was confirmed for the 3-factor model of the final measure. For the verification of validity, using the cohesion measure of group counseling, therapeutic factor measure of group counseling, counseling satisfaction measure, and counseling performance measure, the reference validity was confirmed. A positive correlation was found between the cohesion measure, therapeutic factor measure of group counseling, counseling satisfaction measure, counseling performance measure, and working alliance measure of group counseling. It was also confirmed that the counseling satisfaction measure and counseling performance measure are well explained by the working alliance measure of group counseling. The tool was confirmed as valid for measuring the working alliance of group counseling. Fourth, the difference between groups according to high working alliance and low working alliance levels was confirmed through the qualitative analysis. Using the proposed working alliance measure of group counseling, high-level working alliance and low-level working alliance were distinguished, and seven participants' experience in group counseling was analyzed. In the low-level working alliance group, three major categories were derived, such as ‘not feeling the group is safe,' ‘work time and contents coordination are not properly conducted,' and ‘withdrawing from the group participation.' In the high-level working alliance group, the study finally confirmed ‘supportive and challenge-enabling mood,' ‘with the help of group, recognition of task and determination to do work are created,' and ‘spontaneous participation in one's and others' work happened.' Lastly, the meaning, findings an implications of this study were discussed, and the proposal for follow-up studies was discussed.
