This study is an attempt to discuss the theory of art therapy, which has long been biased toward the approach discussion after Naumberg and Kramer. Although art therapy has achieved quantitative growth in a short period in Korea, it seems that they are not going any further in terms of academic quality. Primarily, the lack of a unique theory discussion of Art therapy has caused a crisis in the academic identity, so art therapy has ironically faced this question, “What is art therapy?”. Therefore, this study focuses on two questions to discuss the theory of art therapy centered on art: The one is about what the meaning of art is in art therapy, and the other is about how to understand client suffering and recovery in art therapy. Then, this study proposes a new theoretical perspective and understanding of clients through the identification of the meaning of art in art therapy by multidisciplinary dialogues with evolutionary art, evolutionary psychology, psychoanalysis, and hermeneutics. First of all, the universality of art as an expression tool was discussed in an evolutionary perspective for the reason why art should be used in psychotherapy. Ellen Dissanayake says that art is a natural way of being and also a container of feeling, which is performed by the form of play or ritual. And if we extend this to Darwin’s evolution and adaptation concept from the individual perspective, art is an adaptation system to maintain the emotional homeostasis of safety in a group, and it leads to the conclusion that it can form of intimacy within the group and survive. The reason why art could function as an adaptive system in human life is that art contains and expresses emotion. It could be the medium of psychotherapy because it reflects unconsciousness. But the concept of unconsciousness reflected by art has not been specifically discussed in art therapy research. So, I apply the concept of Christopher Bollas and discuss it as a linguistic structure called ‘Unthought Known’, which remains in the record of experience but has not yet been thought. When understanding the unconsciousness of art as the language concept of Bollas, the viewpoint of art in art therapy expands the process of experiencing who has focused on the art product. In other words, the client’s experience of making art could be understood as ‘process’ that contains unconsciousness, an ontological grammar. Therefore we no longer need to understand and analyze the theory of psychotherapy as being separated with art. This is the cornerstone of overcoming the objectification of art that comes from the influence of the projective drawing test and the symbolic meaning specifically presented by a dogmatic theory and method. It is an important precondition for discussing the therapeutic value of art in art therapy. Based on this premise, this study reinterprets the art in art therapy as an ontological language called Art-Langue, as well as the process of art therapy as a fusion of horizon by hermeneutics perspective of Hans Georg Gadamer. The hermeneutical perspective helps to keep the individuality and diversity of the client’s understanding of art by overcoming the attitude of objectifying the art product and understand it as an objectified symbol in art therapy. So the meaning of art in art therapy should be understood as ‘language.’ In Gadamer’s theory, language is a system that structures the world and a critical medium that enables us to understand the world through the fusion of horizon. From a hermeneutical perspective of art therapy, art is Art-Langue that reflect his concept of language. Humans have art as Langue, a universal language that contains the instrumentality and the unconsciousness that anyone can use, but mostly, in a degenerated state. But art as Langue becomes Art-Langue, which is the ontological mother tongue of the same layer as speech, through the intervention of art therapist. Art-Langue is the result of utterance interpreted by the client’s unconsciousness as fore-understanding through the continuous expansion in art therapy, which is an event of understanding. When art functions as Art-Langue, the client’s art is not the object of interpretation anymore. The interpreter is the client himself, and the object of interpretation becomes the client as the other who experiences the symptoms. Art therapist helps the client’s unconsciousness to be subjectified while overlooking the whole therapy process. Subjectification means providing continuous connectivity so that the client can interpret his symptoms. Due to the misinterpretation that unconsciousness as language is driven, most clients are subjected to abstract the state that is overwhelmed by symptoms. But this becomes transformed into a figurative life through dialectical fusion of the horizon of understanding between art, client, and therapist, and finally the expansion of existence becomes achieved. In this regard, the Art therapy in a hermeneutical perspective overcomes the existing approaches in which art is used only as an expressive tool in the theory of psychotherapy and suggests the possibility of art as a unique theory with the therapeutic basis.
