Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju is a fortress constructed during the Baekje Dynasty with the entire mountain composed of the fortress wall and relevant facilities. Seongan Village within the fortress was established on the widest flat area within the Gongsanseong Fortress. Trial excavation has been carried out from 2005 to present and historical remains found through the 5th excavation in 2012 included 8 building sites, drainage system, receiving water reservoir and site with scattered ironware during the Baekje Dynasty and 4 building sites estimated to have been established during the Unified Silla Dynasty. This study executed metallurgical analysis on 4 pieces of slags and 3 iron fragments excavated from the site with scattered ironware in the Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju in order to investigate the technological system of the steel manufacturing process through the results of the analysis and to disclose the properties of the historical remains. Slags excavated from the site with scattered ironware in the Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju generally displayed higher total iron contents than that of the ancient slags. Moreover, there were found to be forging slag with observation of the condensed microstructure as the results of repetitive forging or enormous globular or laminated wustite structures. Iron fragments also displayed high total iron contents and were found to be casting related iron fragments having grey cast iron structure with observation of cementite and graphite, and white cast iron structure with observation of ledeburite. In addition, there was trend of high P2O5 contents in the by-products of iron manufacturing in overall. Moreover, there also were high P2O5 contents in the horse equipment excavated from the water reservoir facility of the same historical remains and in the non-metallic inclusions of the iron arrowheads excavated from the site with scattered ironware. It was assumed that they have high phosphorous(P) contents due to the burial environment from which head bones and horse bones have been excavated from the water reservoir and collection facility in the village within the Gongsanseong Fortress and that high P2O5 contents are observed in the forging slags and non-metallic inclusions of iron arrowheads due to the effects of the sedimentations immersed in the water as water drainage channels have been discovered in the area around the site with scattered ironware. As the result of chemical analysis, wustite was detected in all XRD with the exclusion of the G5-5. Wustite structure was also observed under metal microscope even in the non-detected G5-5. As the results of presumption by substituting the XRF analysis results into the FAS phase diagram, G5-1, G5-2, G5-3, G5-4, G5-6 and G5-7, which are forging slags and cast iron fragments, are estimated to have been extruded at the temperature range of 1,200∼1,300℃, while G5-5, which is also a forging slag but with large proportion of glassy slag, have been extruded at the temperature range of 1.470∼1,595℃. Therefore, it is presumed that iron works were executed with the temperature range of 1,200∼1,300℃ in general at the site with scattered ironware in the Seongan village within the Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju at the time. Although furnace or blast pipe for iron manufacturing has not been excavated from the historical remains in the Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju, artifacts including plate shaped iron-artifacts used for the preliminary work of flatly compressing the products manufactured for execution of iron refining process and forging process, forging iron artifacts with unknown use, and crucible with separate pouring spout were excavated along with the slags and iron fragments. Therefore, the above research results indicate that there would have been production facility for ironware in the historical remains within Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju. Moreover, it is presumed that there existed a venue at which intensive processes of smithing and melting at the completion stage of making forging and casting iron artifacts were executed rather than smelting processes on the basis of confirmation of the presence of forging related artifacts and casting related artifacts in the aforementioned sites.
