The purpose of this study is to analyze factors affecting hepatitis A prevention behavior through variables of health belief model, which have been traditionally used for explanation and predicion of preventive health behavior, and to investigate the mediated effects of self-efficacy in this process. The research was designed with a structured questionnaire, a sample of 238 male or females aged 19 and over who lived in three cities in Chungnam and Sejong Special Self-Governing city. Data were collected from September 26, 2019 to October 25, 2019. using method with non-probabilistic sample. The analysis of data was done by t-test, ANOVA, Sobel test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS WIN 24.0 program. The results of this study were as follows:
First, the overall average of the subjects' beliefs about hepatitis A was 3.18 / 5. In terms of sub-factors, 'benefit' was the highest at 3.83 / 5, 'severity' 3.71 / 5, 'barriers' 2.55 / 5 and 'susceptibility' 2.42 / 5. Knowledge of hepatitis A averaged 7.02 / 14. Self-efficacy was 3.76 / 5 and preventive behavior was 3.31 / 5, which was higher than the average.
Second, as a result of verifying the difference in hepatitis A preventive behavior according to general characteristics, it was found that more preventive behaviors were performed in the case of women, professionals, spouses without people, residents of big cities, and religions(0.05).
Third, as a result of verifying the correlation of each variable, preventive behavior showed a positive correlation between health status, benefit and self-efficacy. Also, items that showed a significant correlation with self-efficacy were health status, sensitivity, benefit, and barriers. Among them, the higher the level of susceptibility and barriers, the lower the self-efficacy level, which showed a significant negative correlation. Health status and benefit showed a positive correlation with self-efficacy.
Fourth, health status(=0.279) showed the greatest influence on hepatitis A prevention behavior. The next was spouse(=-0.241), gender(=-0.212), self-efficacy(= 0.180), benefit(=0.165), and student(=-0.148). In other words, the better the health status, the higher the self-efficacy level and the higher the benefit level, the more health prevention behavior, and the less preventive behavior in case of male and no spouse or student. Fifth, the Sobel test showed that health conditions, susceptibility, benefits and barriers have a medial effect on the process of affecting hepatitis A preventive action.
Based on the above results, I would like to make the following suggestions.
First, in order to increase the preventive actions of hepatitis A, an educational and environmental approach that highlights the benefits of health belief factors is necessary.
Second, self-efficacy is a factor that increases the preventive action of hepatitis A, but it also acts as a mediator of other factors, so it is necessary to operate a program to increase self-efficacy.
