The Korean education system has stressed the importance of developing practical and effective English communication skills as one of the key objectives in English education under a unique language teaching and learning environment characterized by ‘English as a Foreign Language’, or EFL. It is only in recent years, however, that there have been many researches on how to improve the communication skills of learners under the EFL environment with a raising awareness that educational materials demonstrating the distinctive features of spoken and written languages are required to achieve the goal. Many of such researches have pointed out that the dialog paragraphs presented in textbooks and the Korea's College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) do not properly reflect the reality of spoken language with lack of authenticity and have suggested that such dialogs be modified and improved accordingly using more authentic spoken language as continuing to have English learners exposed to dialogs lack of real-life authenticity may stand in the way of developing successful communication skills.
This study has identified through preceding research that there have been relatively few studies on the authenticity of dialog paragraphs presented in the CSAT and hardly any analyses on how actual characteristics of spoken and written languages have been reflected in the CSAT throughout the different periods of education curriculum despite a wide range of studies conducted on the English examination of the CSAT in recent years. Against this backdrop, this study has presented four research agendas as to the following subject and come up with analysis results in a bid to contribute to improving English education materials for EFL learners and to taking ongoing researches on authenticity into another level.
‘What are the differences among the conversational dialogues, monologues, and the reading comprehension passages that have appeared in the English examination of the CSAT for the past 27 years in terms of lexical, syntactic, and discourse characteristics, and how are the characteristics of both spoken and written languages reflected in the examination? And, how have these characteristics been demonstrated in different periods of the Korean education curriculum?’
For this, the study has reviewed the preceding studies at home and abroad on the characteristics of both spoken and written languages and identified that a understanding of written language takes acquisition of more vocabularies than the spoken language and that the spoken language features lower levels of lexical diversity and more use of high frequency words than the written one. Syntactically speaking, the spoken language is more complicated and features shorter noun phrases than the written counterpart in an apparent bid to avoid syntactic complexity. In terms of discourse properties, the written language features higher levels of cohesiveness and more frequent use of logical connectives than the spoken counterpart. The spoken language features frequent word overlap or repetition, which raises the consistency and concreteness of words and facilitates a smooth communication.
To find out how these previous research literatures are associated with the English examination of the CSAT, this study has analyzed the listening and reading sections of 28 CSAT English examination during the period between 1994 and 2020 with the listening section broken into two parts: one that involves a conversational partner and the other that does not in reference to the literature that describes the characteristics that appear due to social interactions.
The analysis has found that the dialogues, monologues, and the reading comprehension passages of the CSAT English examination have differences in terms of lexical, syntactic, and discourse perspectives, which mostly match the description of the literatures in terms of the differences between the spoken and written languages except syntactic complexity and word overlap or repetition. These findings suggest possible differences between the actual dialogs and the dialogue paragraphs in the examination, which raises a need for follow-up studies on the appropriateness of such differences considering the unique characteristics of college entrance examination or further studies and efforts to improve the authenticity of English testing materials if it is found to be difficult to determine whether it is appropriate or not.
When it comes to differences in different education curriculum periods, no distinct differences have been found in lexical aspects although there are differences, to some extent, in terms of syntactic pattern density (in noun phrase, verb phrase, gerund phrase, and infinitive phrase), semantic cohesiveness (similarity in meaning among sentences and new and old information) and logical connectives (causal connective). Further studies should be needed to confirm whether or not these differences serve as a factor to better reflect the characteristics of actual spoken language.
Lastly, the study suggests that follow-up studies on the characteristics of spoken language used in the CSAT English examination separate the dialog from the monologue as the relationship between the reading comprehension passage and the monolog is different from the relationship between the reading comprehension passage and the dialog although both are based on the vocal language.
