The airborne particles entering through the building shell can afford to impact on indoor concentration. Epidemiologic studies indicates that the adverse health effect of exposures to airborne particles including contaminants such as sulfate and nitrogen generated with industry and combustion processes. Thus, the evaluation on ambient particles impact on indoors is important to analyze the health risk of exposure to indoor particles and establish indoor air quality management approach. The airborne particles infiltration varied with building factors such as airtightness, floor area and environmental factors such as wind speed, outdoor particle concentration. The building characteristics of multifamily housing units as one of the most common residence type in Korea and the weather conditions following the seasonal changes can influence the indoor particle concentration. Therefore, understanding the relationship between building factors of multifamily housing units and outdoor particles infiltration with weather condition in Korea is quite important. The objective of this study is to evaluate the ambient PM2.5 infiltration depending on airtightness of multifamily housing units. Based on the correlation analysis and linear regression between ambient PM2.5 infiltration into indoors and building factors by field measurements, the empirical model was developed to predict PM2.5 infiltration factor and the airtightness of building was employed as a predictor of model. For estimating the outdoor-originating PM2.5 in the multifamily housing unit with the weather condition in Korea, the annual network simulation for the airflow and particle transport analysis was conducted. The building leakage data, penetration coefficient and deposition loss rate as the key parameter for airflow and particle transport model were determined by field measurements. Then the annual ambient PM2.5 infiltration and the outdoor source contribution to indoor PM2.5 depending on the airtightness of building was evaluated.
The main findings of this study are as follows: 1) The principal determinants of building factors for airborne PM2.5 infiltration in multifamily housing units is the airtightness of buildings. Using the empirical model based on the relation with PM2.5 infiltration and airtightness of building, the indoor PM2.5 concentration of outdoor origin in leakier housing units(ACH50 : 10 h-1) represent 1.5 times higher than airtight housing units(ACH50 : 1 h-1). This result shows that the occupants of leakier housing units can easily expose to higher indoor PM2.5 concentration of outdoor origin although the airborne PM2.5 concentration and weather conditions were similar.
2) The network model with key parameter based on the field measurements was presented to evaluate the PM2.5 infiltration depending on airtightness of building considering the various weather conditions. The network model for airflow and PM2.5 transport statistically evaluated with the tools suggested by ASTM D5157 and showed good agreements for the measured data.
3) As the result of the annual airflow and PM2.5 transport simulation, the indoor PM2.5 concentration in Spring and Winter was higher rather than in Summer and Fall for both of airtight and leakier housing unit. The seasonal variance of the PM2.5 infiltration factor was very small. And the PM2.5 infiltration was varied depending on airtightness of buildings. Especially, Annual average of PM2.5 infiltration factor on airtightness of class F corresponding to older housing units in Korea was up to 0.68.
4) The annual average of outdoor source contribution to indoor PM2.5 concentration according to indoor source strength was 1% to 10% in airtight housing units(class A) and 44% to 69% in leakier housing units(class F). The outdoor source contribution to indoor PM2.5 was increased in Spring and Winter. This results indicated that the indoor and outdoor source contribution to indoor PM2.5 on time-series was vary depending on the airtightness of multifamily housing units and weather conditions. And the outdoor airborne PM2.5 could be more affecting to indoors of Leaky housing units than airtight housing units. Also, the composition of indoor airborne PM2.5 could be different by PM2.5 infiltration depending on the airtightness of buildings and weather conditions.
