This study aimed to provide objective indicators for both learners and teachers when they select and apply a series of children’s literature suitable for each school year and publisher. In addition, it constructed a corpus of children’s literature series using corpus linguistics methodology, and it corpusized the 2015 revised English curriculum and the full textbook of each publisher. Based on such data, it set the following research questions.
First, how are the size, diversity, and part-of-speech frequency of the vocabulary computed based on the “children’s literature corpus”? Second, what are the correlations of the “children’s literature corpus” with the basic vocabulary of the 2015 English curriculum and the textbook vocabulary of each school year and publisher? Third, which series of children’s literature are suitable for each school year and publisher?
This study used corpus linguistics methodology to answer the research questions. It selected children’s literature based on the ERIK (English Reading Index in Korea), which comprises the reading phases applicable to Korean learners. It selected a total of 16 series from the children’s literature in ERIK phases 1–4. Reflecting the number of students per class, the number of books of each series was set to 25, and the children’s literature corpus was created with a total of 400 books. The criterion for the curriculum vocabulary was the basic vocabulary list of the 2015 revised English curriculum. For the criteria for the textbook vocabulary, the present study downloaded textbook data from each publisher’s website and constructed a textbook corpus with a total of 20 textbooks (i.e., five textbooks each for years 3 to 6). The corpus analysis programs used for the present study were WordSmith Tools 7.0, the Range program, the Parts-of-speech.Info, and Excel. Using these four programs, this study examined the size, vocabulary diversity, single sentence length, and vocabulary frequency ratio by part of speech of the children’s literature corpus. It also compared the children’s literature corpus with the basic vocabulary list of the 2015 revised English curriculum and identified the concordance rate between the two. Additionally, it investigated vocabularies that were frequently used in the children’s literature series but were not included in the basic vocabulary list. Last, it selected a series of children’s literature that was the most suitable for each textbook by examining the concordance rate between the children’s literature series and the textbooks of each school year and publisher. Based on the research results, it drew the following conclusions.
First, the analysis of the children’s literature corpus showed that there were large differences in the size of the corpus and the number of used vocabulary items in the ERIK phase and the series. Second, a proportional relationship was found between the school year and the concordance rate between the textbook corpus and the children’s literature series. That is, as the school year progressed, the concordance rate increased. The highest concordance rate was 52.94%. Third, the analysis found that, because the length of each sentence in the children’s literature series of the ERIK phases 1–3 was not discrepant from the guidelines for the single sentence length of the curriculum, it was applicable to school sites. According to the guidelines for single sentence length, the number of words for years 3–4 and 5–6 was around 240 and 260, respectively. Considering the frequency and ratio of the use of “and,” “but,” and “or” all together, all of the children’s literature series of the ERIK phases 1–3 are applicable to the curriculum. Fourth, the analysis showed the concordance rate between the children’s literature corpus and the basic vocabulary list of the curriculum. The highest concordance rate with the basic vocabulary list was 86.60%, whereas the highest rate with only the vocabulary list recommended for elementary school students was 71.06%. Fifth, the analysis found a total of 52 vocabulary items that were frequently used in the children’s literature series but were not included in the basic vocabulary list of the curriculum. After selecting the top 1000 vocabulary items in the corpus of the children’s literature series, this study compared them with the basic vocabulary list. Sixth, based on the concordance rate of vocabulary, the present study selected five children’s literature series suitable for the textbook of each school year and publisher. In all cases, the series of the ERIK phases 1–3 were selected, while the series of the phase 4 were not.
The results of this study provide the following implications for elementary English education. First, children’s literature series should be selected among the top five children’s literature series with a high concordance rate by school year and publisher according to the level and characteristics of the class. Series of even the same ERIK phase have different numbers of used vocabulary items and STTR values; therefore, considering this, children’s literature series should be applied by level. Second, the basic vocabulary list of the curriculum should be reconstructed based on children’s literature series that use vocabularies of authenticity. Reading is a way to easily increase exposure to English regardless of time and place. Of numerous types of reading materials, children’s literature series arouse children’s interests and use authentic vocabularies. If the basic vocabulary list of the curriculum is reconstructed based on the vocabulary of the children’s literature series, Korean learners will be able to more easily experience children’s literature. Third, students’ learning of various vocabulary items should be considered and allowed when developing textbooks. The highest concordance rate between the children’s literature and textbook corpora was 52.94%. However, to make the concordance rate higher, textbooks should reduce students’ dislike for reading, which results from vocabulary knowledge by providing a greater variety of vocabulary in textbooks. Fourth, we should reset the ERIK phases and renew the book examples of each phase. According to the results of this study, the vocabulary size of the children’s literature series presented in the ERIK research was not in direct proportion to the ERIK phases. Thus, further research is needed on the ERIK, which comprises the reading phases designed for Korean learners. Fifth, active utilization of children’s literature series is needed to increase elementary school students’ exposure to English vocabulary.
The comparison between the children’s literature series and the curriculum, which has been discussed in this research, has the following limitations, and this study intends to make suggestions for further studies. First, this study compared the children’s literature series with the vocabulary of the curriculum and textbooks based on the type of vocabulary. However, to know vocabulary items is not the same as understanding the meaning of a sentence. Therefore, research is needed on the aspect of collocation as well as the concordance rate of individual vocabulary items. Second, if further research first examines the children’s literature of the series corresponding the ERIK phases 1–3, more suitable studies will be conducted on children’s literature corpora. In accordance with this, children’s literature series can be selected based on objective indicators, and a wider variety of options can be offered to teachers and learners.
