Many previous studies have found that climate change, including temperature rise, affects vectors, water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases. Therefore, this study aims to identify the trends and correlations between climate factors and national notifiable diseases.
We used climate factor data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korean Statistical Information Service(KOSIS) from 2001 to 2018. The trends and characteristics of climate factors and national notifiable diseases were figured out and Spearman's rank correlation analysis was conducted to correlate them.
The number of national notifiable diseases is increasing, and seasonality occurs frequently in summer and autumn. The mean precipitation was significantly correlated with the incidence of vibrio sepsis, and the number of days of heatwaves and the number of heatwaves warnings was strongly correlated with the incidence of scrub typhus, leptospirosis, and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.
This study found that there is a correlation between changing climate factors and national notifiable diseases. It provided the primary data that can be used as a basis for establishing infectious disease management policies and health adaptation strategies for climate change according to the rapidly changing climate of the Korea. Based on this, related studies need to be actively conducted in the future.
