Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on earth. This is called cellulose nanofibril (CNF), which is made of nano-sized fibers by mechanical or chemical methods. Cellulose and cellulose nanofibers have high hydrophilicity due to the large amount of hydroxyl groups (-OH) present on the surface. CNF is composed of crystalline and amorphous forms and the crystalline portion exhibits high mechanical properties and various chemical modifications are possible by using surface hydroxyl groups of the amorphous portion. In addition, it has a variety of properties such as reproducibility, biodegradability, gas barrier properties, high viscosity, water absorption ability, high specific surface area, etc., so there are many applications. In particular, environmentally friendly, high strength and nanoscale materials are being researched to apply them. In this study, various surface modifications were attempted to apply CNF, and CNF barrier films that block moisture and oxygen, CNF-polymer nanocomposites used for interior and exterior materials of automobiles, and pre-biodegradable CNF complexes used for living bone supports. CNF exhibits excellent gas barrier properties when making dense films due to the presence of many strong intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In this study, we applied this property to produce a barrier film that blocks water and oxygen that can be used in food and medical supplies. Drying conditions were adjusted to produce a flat and uniform CNF film, and it was confirmed that the gas barrier property was excellent. In addition, in order to improve the water barrier property, the surface of the CNF was treated with silane to make the surface hydrophobic. Finally, the water barrier property was more improved through the lamination process with the hydrophobic polymer. CNF exhibits the same excellent mechanical properties as carbon fiber, which has been spotlighted as a conventional metal or a recent strength reinforcing filler, and has the advantage of being environmentally friendly. Recently, as environmental problems are raised around the world, many researches are being conducted to replace them with eco-friendly and renewable materials. Accordingly, interest in CNF is also increasing. Many studies have been made to use CNF as a filler for strength reinforcement by complexing with a polymer, but it has a disadvantage in that dispersion is difficult due to strong attraction between fibers. To supplement for this, the inorganic material was grown on the surface of CNF to reduce the attractive force by reducing the distance between fibers, and composited with the polymer by melt-mixing process. When CNF and polymer were complexed, mechanical properties were improved, and thermal and rheological properties were also changed due to the interaction between polymer and filler. In addition, the effect of the aspect ratio of the filler in the composite was investigated, and the physical properties of the composite were investigated by the post-treatment to enhance the compatibility of the polymer and the filler. Recently, studies have been reported to synthesize hydroxyapatite (HAp), a biological bone-forming mineral, into collagen fibers and apply it to bone scaffolds that break down in the body. Collagen and HAp are both substances that affect bone formation, so there is no need to re-stimulate the scaffold. However, obtaining high purity collagen for transplantation into the human body is an expensive and complex process. CNF is biodegradable, so it is suitable as a fiber to replace collagen. After preparing collagen-like compounds through surface modification of CNF, HAp is generated on the surface of CNF using polyaspartic acid, which is a similar peptide.
