The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of perfectionistic self-presentation and cognitive emotion regulation strategy and in particular, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, on the issue of parental psychological control and interpersonal relationship problems among undergraduate students, and to verify the process thereof. For this study, a poll employing parental psychological control criterions, interpersonal relationship problem criterions, perfectionistic self-presentation criterions, and cognitive emotion regulation strategy criterions were conducted on male and female undergraduate students of universities located in Seoul, and a total of 514 responses were analyzed. In analyzing data, this study employed statistical terms and methods such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha and the Structural Equation Model (SEM), SPSS 21.0 and Mplus 7.0 program. The results of the study were as follows. First, parental psychological control, perfectionistic self-presentation, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, and interpersonal relationship problems had a meaningful positive relationship. Second, perfectionistic self-presentation and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy were verified to have mediating effects in the influence of parental psychological control on interpersonal relationship problems. As a result, parental psychological control not only directly influences interpersonal relationship problems but also has mediating effects through perfectionistic self-presentation and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy. In other words, parental psychological control influences interpersonal relationship problems in undergraduate students in their first stages of adulthood, not unlike in teenage years. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that perfectionistic self-presentation and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy were important variables in the causation and maintainence of interpersonal relationship problems in undergraduate students with parental psychological control. As a result it was deemed more effective to intervene in the cognitive variable of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy than in the environmental variable of parental psychological control when trying to solve the interpersonal relationship problems of corresponding counselees at the site of counseling. Third, the sequential mediating effects of perfectionistic self-presentation and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy were confirmed. This explains that in the relation between parental psychological control and interpersonal relationship problems, perfectionistic self-presentation intensifies maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy by accelerating the latter. In conclusion, the greater the intensity of parental psychological control, the greater the tendency of perfectionistic self-presentation, which is a character variable. This causes an increase in maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, a cognitive variable, which then results in the intensification of interpersonal relationship problems in undergraduate students. It was also confirmed that parental psychological control was, as ever, an important variable in the interpersonal relationship problems of undergraduate students in their first stage of adulthood. The study comprehensively looks into the various variables that cause interpersonal relationship problems in undergraduate students in their first stage of adulthood when intimacy is a major task and substantially verifies the process in which parental psychological control influences perfectionistic self-presentation, a character variable, then maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, a cognitive variable, and consequentially the interpersonal relationship problems of the undergraduate student. This holds significance in that it provides comprehensive understanding in the interpersonal relationship problems of undergraduate students with corresponding complaints at the site of counseling, and useful reference in solving these problems.
