Shihwa Lake, a specially managed coastal area in Korea, has been continuously reported on serious heavy metal pollution caused by industrial activities and urban areas. More than 18,000 companies are operating in the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complexes on the north side of Shihwa Lake, and there are many heavy metal pollution sources due to various industries and transportation activities. Heavy metal pollutants accumulated in industrial complexes can easily flow into the sea through streams during rainfall, but actually there is a lake of specific information for tracking the source of heavy metal pollution. In this study, heavy metal pollution in Shihwa Lake and its watershed was investigated to trace the cause of heavy metal pollution in Shihwa Lake and streams flowing into Shihwa Lake. Also, the load of heavy metal flowing through the industrial complexes was estimated by investigating the runoff characteristics with the concentration change of heavy metals in the rain runoff during rainfall. The level of heavy metal contamination in the surface and sediment core of Shihwa Lake was reduced compared to before the operation of tidal power plants, but heavy metal contamination still occurred through industrial activities. The RDS in the Shihwa Industrial Complex, one of the sources of heavy metal pollution from Shihwa Lake, had higher metal concentration and anthropogenic pollution as the particle size decreased. As a result of investigating the runoff characteristics of heavy metals in the rainfall runoff during rainfall, the dissolved heavy metals show almost different runoff characteristics according to the changes in precipitation and flow rate according to the survey period. Particulate metals showed a similar trend with suspended solids concentration in rainfall runoff. Average heavy metal load in stormwater runoff was Cr 128.0 g, Co 12.4 g, Ni 98.5 g, Cu 608 g, Zn 8,430 g, As 7.0 g, Cd 3.7 g, Pb 253 g in one rain event. Considering the annual rainfall days, rainfall amounts and watershed area of the industrial complex, the amount of heavy metals flowing into Shihwa Lake through stormwater runoff will be significant, which could be the main cause of heavy metal contamination in Shihwa Lake. In order to effectively reduce non-point heavy metal pollution in Shihwa Lake, it is urgent to prepare the measure of heavy metal pollution through industrial complexes. In particular, it is very important to control the fine particle RDS (below 125~250 ㎛), which is likely to cause rainfall runoff during raining. Moreover, in order to track specific heavy metal pollution sources, further investigation using advanced scientific forensic methods such as metallic stable isotope is necessary.
