Electrolysis is an environmentally friendly method of producing hydrogen directly from water. Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is the latest technology that combines the advantages of high energy density and intermittent use of polymer exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) with the use of non-noble metals of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). AEMWE requires the low overvoltage of the catalyst contained in the electrodes for the commercialization of the electrolysis. In this paper, we synthesized oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for application to AEMWE. In addition, a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was fabricated using the synthesized catalysts and applied to a full-cell capable of producing pure hydrogen. In Chapter 2, three-dimensional honeycomb-like Cu0.81Co2.19O4 nanosheet arrays supported by Ni foam via electrochemical co-deposition of Co and Cu hydroxides on Ni foam improves the activity of the electrode. The co-deposition with Cu changes the morphology of the Co hydroxide deposit to form honeycomb-like nanostructures, significantly decreasing the onset potential for oxygen evolution. The Cu0.81Co2.19O4 anode displays an exceptionally low overpotential of 290 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH, and an anion exchange membrane water electrolysis cell employing the above anode achieves a current density of 100 mA cm–2 at 1.68 V in 0.1 M KOH. In Chapter 3, nanosized Cu0.5Co2.5O4 catalyst synthesized by co-precipitation with adjusting pH is applied to the AEMWE cell as an anode, which is demonstrated to have higher efficiency and stability than noble metal. The Cu0.5Co2.5O4 is changed in the composition of Cu/Co and morphology as pH increases and forms into nanoparticles at pH 11, where oxygen vacancy is formed by etching of Cu. In density functional theory study, the electronic structure of Co modified by Cu in Co3O4 lattice leads to optimal adsorption strength, showing a free energy diagram in which thermodynamically favorable potential of Cu0.5Co2.5O4 (1.756 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) than of Co3O4 (1.951 V vs. RHE). The Cu0.5Co2.5O4 catalyst is recorded overpotential of 285 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the AEMWE cell using Cu0.5Co2.5O4 as an anode is exhibited a current density of 1.3 A cm-2 at 1.8 V, which is the highest performance among the reported papers and maintains around 80% energy conversion efficiency at 400 mA cm–2 for 100 hours. In Chapter 4, stability and catalytic activity are enhanced by the easy method of mass production of nano sized Ni catalysts using transition metal oxides, La-Ce oxide on carbon black. The 30Ni_20LCO/C catalyst was synthesized by co-precipitation and solvo-thermal that are simple method and can make higher activity and durability catalyst. La-Ce oxide play a key role to reduce size of Ni particles to under 10 nm scale and serve to improve the characteristics of the catalyst in a reducing atmosphere by forming solid solution. 30Ni_20LCO/C catalyst was recorded the lower overpotential of 124 mV at current density –10 mA cm–2 and higher long-term stability compared to Ni/C catalyst. We suggest that La-Ce oxide forms a partial alloy with Ni to prevent Ni detaching and acts as a barrier to prohibit Ni migration. We proposed mechanism of Ni catalyst degradation based on the results of this work.
