When turning into school age, children can acquire knowledge through the number of books including textbooks and study themselves. During school age, metalinguistic skills such as vocabulary knowledge, reasoning, problem solving and monitoring skills, become a pivotal factor in reading. According to vocabulary knowledge, homonyms are spelled the same but have different meanings. Homonym is used as a means of measuring one’s knowledge in many research fields, which is because in order to resolve the lexical ambiguity of homonyms, the skill of finding clues in the context is required. However, children with language learning disabilities (LLD) have the difficulty in understanding homonyms. The purpose of this study was to test the ability in comprehension and definition of homonyms among year 1 to 3 children with LLD. The subjects of this research were 23 students in total, consisting of 10 LLD students and 13 typically developing (TD) ones (they were in attendance at a 1st to 3rd grade of elementary school in Busan city). As understanding who has LLD or TD, the test: K-CTONI-2, REVT, and KOLRA were practiced to the subjects. Furthermore, defining homonyms and understanding homonyms were performed for each group as the experiment tasks. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the total definition accuracy of homonyms was compared between the group of students with LLD and TD. The students with LLD had significantly lower definition accuracy of homonyms than TD. Second, when comparing the definition accuracy of homonyms with group and dominant/subordinate meaning, LLD showed lower performance than TD. But, when looking at the differences in the groups and on the base of dominant/subordinate meaning, both groups was found to be more difficult about subordinate meaning rather than dominant meaning. Furthermore, in terms of differences in the conditions of the groups it was seen that LLD more have suffered from defining homonym than TD, no matter of dominant or subordinate meaning. Third, considering homonym comprehension ability of both groups, LLD have been significantly lower comprehension of homonym than TD. Fourth, as a result of examining in contrast to homonym comprehension ability by groups and dominant/subordinate meaning, LLD have demonstrated lower performance than TD. Plus, after analysing the differences on groups through same judgement criteria, we can see that both groups have been found to have same capability to less understand subordinate meaning than dominant meaning. In other words, when the differences in the conditions of the groups, LLD were showed lower performance than TD in subordinate meaning. Following the results of the study that LLD have difficulty in understanding of homonym, the LLD student are needed for intervention and support for the homonym. The homonyms are divided into dominant and subordinate meaning, reflecting on familiarity in the midst of the various meanings that the word has. Both children with LLD and TD showed lower subordinate meaning comprehension than the dominant. This is because of differences in familiarity to a meaning of a word. LLD had lower performance than TD in the task of defining homonym, but there was no significant difference between the two groups in the comprehension homonym. However, when it comes to the ability of understanding dominant meaning, there was no difference. This means that LLD can perform similarly to TD, as long as appropriate contextual cues are presented. Therefore, when intervention in grade 1 to 3 students having learning disabilities, proper contextual clues would be used to improve their homonym comprehension.Key words: school-aged children, low elementary years, language-learning disabilities, homonym, dominant, subordinate
