Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a yellow hydrophobic polyphenolic derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, which can be easily found in southern Asia. In previous study curcumin is known to be effect on antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases. Parkinson’s disease(PD) is caused by the loss in the substantia nigra decreases dopamine signaling to the striatum threby contributing to the motor symptoms of PD. In this study, the hydrophobic compound curcumin was made soluble nanoparticles, and the effect on nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as in vivo model was investigated for dopamine metabolism. After ingesting curcumin nanoparticles with E. coli fed by C. elegans, the mutant species were modified with genes related to dopamine neurons after confirming locomotion, basal slowing response, dopamine analysis, and fluorescence microscopy. The genetic mechanism of curcumin nanoparticles was investigated using. As a result, it has been found that curcumin nanoparticles are effective in dopamine neurons because they show an improvement in behavioral ability and an increase in the amount of dopamine. In addition, the indicator species identified as green fluorescent protein was used to confirm that the dat-1 gene is closely related to curcumin nanoparticles. These results confirm that curcumin nanoparticles can be developed as a treatment for Parkinson's disease as well as treatment of diseases such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer.
