A Study on the Works of Gordon Matta-Clark : Focusing on Community Formation through Anarchitectural Work원문보기

The purpose of this paper is to examine the art historical significance of Gordon Matta-Clark's(1943-1978) attempts to reconstruct the disintegrated community of modern society with his 1960s and 70s works. Matta-Clark, who was active in the 1960s and 1970s when the New York City government's urban development plan was active, criticized uniform and discriminatory urban development by cutting buildings. He experimented with the reconstruction of the community by forming the artist communities or performances. Matta-Clark also noted that the grid-type cities and buildings by development of the New York City government led to disrupt communication among individuals and to deconstruct communities in the region. He chose an empty building just before it was demolished and cut a part to open the building or engaged artists and local residents to participate. He attempted to recover the community through various types of experiments on living spaces and local communities. These works are explained by the concept of Anachitecture. Anarchitecture is an idea conceived by Matta-Clark and the name of a group composed by the artist. He described Anarchitecture as an intention to ridicule and absurd the functional concept of architecture. This was realized by appropriation of the space abandoned by urban planning of urban space or building space. His research into abandoned spaces behind New York at the time of active urban development was applied to his work in combination with the concept of Entropy embodied in the temporary structures claimed by senior artist Robert Smithson. With its temporality, Matta-Clark's work did not last long due to his working characteristics to anticipate the removal. Thus, the artist left the work in the form of photographs, videos, drawings, and documentaries. Matta-Clark's ultimate emphasis was on community restoration through building cuts and performance. Already, the common denominator of 'region' is difficult to apply to people living in urban space as well as in the 1960~1970s. His concept of community to overcome this was to induce local residents to participate in the work and share experiences based on the interest in urban conditions at that time. The work they participated in, although temporarily maintained, helped community members recognize the social problems of the time and provided the possibility for them to connect with each other. This paper focuses on this and attempts to approach Mata-Clark's work with the perspective that community formation is still needed in a dichotomized modern society.
