표면분석을 위해 BET, SEM, EDS, Total acidity and basicity, Zeta potential, XPS을 측정하였고, 2,4-dichlorophenol, fulvic acid, humic acid의 흡착성능을 비교하였다.

Natural organic matter (NOM) refers a substance that exists in natural water and mostly consists of humic substances. Humic substances which are highly hydrophobic and have large molecular weights are divided into humic acid and fulvic acid. Because NOM forms disinfection by-products during the chlorine disinfection process, removal of NOM has an important significance in water treatment processes. Activated carbon (AC) is a widely used adsorbent for water treatment due to its high surface area, beneficial pore structure and reactive surface functional groups. There has been numerous research to increase adsorption capacity for removal of pollutants by physical and chemical modification. However, recent research on modification of activated carbon mainly aimed at the treatment of heavy metals. Little research on treatment of natural organic matter by modified activated carbon has been conducted. This study aimed to modify activated carbon physically and/or chemically in order to improve NOM adsorption. Coal and coconut-based activated carbons were treated with phosphoric acid, ammonia, iron impregnation, and heat treatment. Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), total acidity and basicity, zeta potential, and x-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) was used for surface analysis. The adsorption capacities of 2,4-dichlorophenol, fulvic acid, and humic acid were evaluated The modified activated carbon was named as follows such that coal-based activated carbon was 'F', coconut-based activated carbon was 'S', phosphoric acid treatment was PAC, ammonia treated was MAC, iron impregnation was IX, and iron impregnation/heat treated was MES. In the BET results, F-PAC showed the highest decrease (27.6%), and MES showed the highest increase (2.3%). EDS analyses of Fe content showed that F-MES2.0 had the lowest value (0.21%) and F-IX0.8 had the highest value (19.42%). Zeta potential measurement indicated that acid-treated AC and iron impregnated AC showed positive charges in all pH ranges. The higher negative charge of the basic treated and the impregnated/heat treated AC showed, the higher pH they had. The XPS spectra indicated that Fe2p was analyzed only in F-IX2.0 and F-IX0.8, and Fe form existed as Fe2O3. The 2.4-DCP adsorption showed that the adsorption capacity was high in the order of F-MES2.0> F400> F-IX2.0> F-MAC> F-PAC while the values were 408.77 mg/g, 359.26 mg/g, 349.95 mg/g, 325.65 mg/g, 305.33 mg/g respectively. For the fulvic acid adsorption, Fe impregnation AC has the highest adsorption affinity (19.90 mg/g) among coal-based modified ACs. Among the modified activated carbons, only F-PAC and F-IX2.0 tended to adsorb humic acid and the adsorption capacities were 33.41 mg and 38.82 mg/g respectively. The SYL, coconut-based AC, had a BET value of 1326 m2/g, which was 26.2% higher than F400, and adsorption capacity of 2.4-DCP similar to F400. The coconut-based AC and Fe impregnated/heat-treated(S-MES), has the highest adsorption capacity (380.42 mg/g). However it had a lower adsorption amount than F400. Although humic acid adsorption capacity of S-PAC showed the highest amount as 11.22 mg/g among the coconut-based ACs, F-PAC (33.41 mg/g) was a higher adsorption capacity than that of S-PAC (11.22 mg/g). In this study, activated carbon modification methods were investigated to enhance NOM adsorption and raw materials of AC were compared. The acid treatment and the iron impregnation were the appropriate modification methods for adsorbing NOM.
