The conventional deadlift, an exercise in which the performer stands from floor with holding barbell placed on the floor, has various effects including body muscle hypertrophy, muscle force development, rehabilitation in anterior cruciate ligament and chronic back pain. However, the restriction of flexibility of the hip flexor muscle caused by sedentary life in modern society inhibits the activation of the gluteus maximus, agonistic muscle of hip extension and induces the muscle compensation of the surrounding muscles. Therefore the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of flexibility of hip flexor muscle on the performance of conventional deadlift. Eighteen healthy male were articipated in this study and divided into normal group (age: 24±1.83 yrs, height: 174.5±2.37 m, body mass: 74.4±5.48 kg, 1RM: 138±23.83 kg) and restricted group (age: 24.63±1.69 yrs, height: 171.5±5.29 m, body mass: 74±5.68 kg, 1RM: 137.5±18.32 kg) by Thomas test, which measure flexibility of hip flexor muscles. Eight infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualisys, Sweden; 100 Hz) and three surface electromyography instruments (Noraxon EMG Ultium ESP, Noraxon, USA; 1000 Hz) were used to measure the conventional deadlift. Subjects were asked to perform the conventional deadlift three times with weight of 50%, 70%, and 90% of pre-measured 1RM. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measure was used for statistical verification the effect of flexibility of hip flexor and barbell weight on the variables of muscle activation and kinematics.
1) Muscle Activation of Lower extremity and Back Muscle
The results showed that the conventional deadlift significantly increased the muscle activation of erector spinae muscle, an synergistic muscle, in RG compared to NG on both 70% and 90% weights (p<.05) and significantly induced lower muscle activation of gluteus maximus, agonistic muscle, in RG compared to NG on 90% weight (p<.05).
2) Muscle Activation Ratio of Agonistic Muscle to Synergistic Muscle of Conventional Deadlift
The results showed that the significant differences in muscle activity ratio of synergistic muscle to gluteus maximus, agonistic muscle, in conventional deadlift movement were observed in 90% weight for erector spinae muscle (p<.05) and in all weights for hamstring muscle (p.05).
The reflex inhibition of activation in agonistic muscle due to hyperactivation of antagonistic muscle is called reciprocal inhibition. The restriction on flexibility of hip flexor muscle during conventional deadlift was shown to inhibit gluteus maximus, agonistic muscle and induce muscle compensation causing hyperactivation of erector spinae muscle, a synergistic muscle, and hamstring muscle. This may reduce the effect of exercise and cause muscle overuse, increasing the risks of muscle fatigue and injuries such as muscle strain. Despite of the change in the activation of the agonistic and synergistic muscles, no difference in motion was observed between two groups. It is because of the sufficient movement due to the compensation of synergistic muscles. It might be difficult at the training of sport field, where guidance and performance of exercise are done, through to identify the occurrence of muscle compensation and to predict in advance the reduction of exercise effect or the risk of injury according to the kinematics, actual movement in sport field. Therefore, It is necessary to assess the flexibility of the hip flexor muscles before the conventional deadlift and, as needed, to train to address the lack of flexibility.
