This study examined the essence of spatial design for the formation of ponds in the Seyeongjeong garden made by Kosan Yun Seondo and considered an internal meaning of ponds' spatial formation, by especially focusing on Gyedam and Hoisudam. Main factors of spatial formation of the Seyeongjeong garden include Gyedam, Hoisudam, Seyeongjeong, Panseokbo, Chilam, Dongdae, Seodae, Dolchulsuje and Oksodae. Gyedam characterized by natural lines and Hoisudam consisting of straight lines are adjacent to the front and the rear of Seyeonjeong, respectively. Based on such placement, the essence of spatial formation were understood around the forms of ponds, intrinsic thought and usage patterns. Gyedam is an atypical curved pond built by using a natural mountain stream. It is also a elegant space for dynamic usage of a boat ride, singing and dancing, fishing and the appreciation of Sugyeong, as well as a space containing Yun Seondo's nature-friendly thought, as a garden facility for embodying 'letting nature be'. Hoisudam, as a typical form of Bangjibangdo(island of squares in a square pond) using straight revetment, symbolically represents Yin-Yang and Five Elements. It is also a space expressing an ideal world for speculation and contemplation, rather than for practical use. Among Seyeonjeong ponds, Gyedam and Hoisudam have different characteristics in terms of forms and internal thought. They are placed close to the front and the rear of Seyeonjeong, respective, indicating complementary spatial formation which can be thought to complete the sequestered life of Yun Seondo.
