Natural occurring radioactive material (NORM) is material naturally found in the environment that contains radioactive elements, such as uranium (U), thorium (Th), and potassium (K) and any of their decay products, such as radium (Ra) and radon (Rn). Among them, radon (222Rn) is a cancer-causing gas and is a radioactive material that needs to be investigated and managed. The production of radon depends on the concentration of the immediate parent isotopes in the rock and soil because radon is produced continuously by the decay of longer-lived nuclides such as uranium and thorium found in minerals. Although the geological property including parent isotopes and the radon concentration of soil are correlated with the distribution of NORMs, few studies have investigated their correlations in Korea. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to examine the distribution of natural radioactive materials through mineralogical and geochemical properties of rocks and soils in Goesan and Geumsan areas, and to investigate the correlation between them. Goesan and Geumsan, the study areas, are mainly composed of metamorphic sedimentary rocks subjected to hydrothermal alteration and granite intrusion. For investigation, the metamorphic sedimentary rocks and surrounding soils were collected from 13 different sites, respectively. PLM, XRD, XRF, CHNS, ICP-MS analyses were used to characterize mineral assemblages, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics. To characterize NORM, EPMA was also used to observe the minerals containing uranium and thorium in rocks and soils. The content of radon in the soil gas was measured using the DURRIDGE RAD7 radon detector. In the rocks, mineral particles showed the features of metamorphism, such as arrangement in one direction or a zonal crenulation cleavage. And also the halo which is a trace of decay of radioactive material was observed by PLM. The minerals in the rocks were mainly quartz, mica, chlorite and feldspar, and SiO2 (69.2%) and Al2O3 (17.7%) were the major components. As soil features, the pH of the soils ranged from 3.6 to 6.9, and the pH values tended to decrease as the soil location approached the intrusive granite. Soil textures varied from loamy sand to clay. The soils consisted of quartz, feldspar, chlorite, hornblende, as well as secondary minerals such as illite, vermiculite and kaolinite formed by weathering. The major constituents of soils were SiO2 (66.5%) and Al2O3 (17.2%), similar to rocks, and the Fe and C contents were high in dark soils. As such, there were no NORMs associated with the major minerals and constituents of the rocks and soils, indicating that NORMs were present in trace amounts. The ICP-MS analysis showed that the rocks contained avg 7.2 mg/kg and 16.8 mg/kg of U and Th, respectively. In particular, CB-R-5 containing the highest U (36.9 mg/kg) had high contents of C (10.8%), V (>1000 mg/kg), Mo (84.3 mg/kg), and Cr (2190 mg/kg). In the case of soils, the average contents of U (7.9 mg/kg) and Th (18.7 mg/kg) were similar to those of rocks. EPMA analysis of rock samples containing high U and Th showed that the elements existed in mineral forms such as uraninite, thorite, and monazite. On the other hand, in the soil samples, natural radioactive materials were observed only in the form of monazite. As gaseous NORMs, radon and thoron in Geumsan soils were measured to investigate the correlation between the NORMs of rocks and soils. The radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) ranged from 5,370 to 75,600 Bq/m3 and from 12,717 to 23,050 Bq/m3, respectively, with a large range of concentrations. However, radon and thoron showed little correlation with the concentrations of uranium and thorium, the parent species in the soils. Therefore, although the amount of NORMs in Goesan and Geumsan areas was small, they existed in various mineral forms in rocks and soils, and the content of thorium was higher than that of uranium. In addition, there were similarities in the form and distribution of the radioactive minerals between rocks and soils, but there was no clear correlation between the contents of radioactive elements. This may be influenced by geological characteristics such as the weathering of rocks or leaching of NORM into groundwater, and it is believed that the pore size and water content in the soil may affect radon gas emissions to the atmosphere. Therefore, although the forms of the radioactive materials in the rocks or soils are closely related to each other, the correlation between the contents of each element may vary greatly depending on the environmental geological conditions.
