Many researchers in various major fields have obtained results that total content of heavy metals in soil by itself are not a good measure for assessing their bioavailability and not a very useful tool to determine potential risks from soil and contamination. For this reason, the scientific community is moving towards the consensus that evaluation of metal contamination based solely on total soil content is insufficient to predict the actual ecological impact. The aims of this study are to analyze the correlation between 10 widely used single extractions in the context of evaluating the soil contamination, to predict the heavy metals content of plant uptake using the physical-chemical properties of soil and extraction characteristics of single extraction, and to propose a new contamination assessment method using the heavy metals uptake into lettuce predicted by statistical methods. Single extractions were divided into several groups such as weak (exchangeable), normal (low concentration of organic or inorganic acids), and aggressive (high concentration of organic or inorganic acids and complex agents) extractants according to hierarchical cluster analysis of the single extractions based on Pearson correlations although the extraction characteristics are different for each heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. These results indicate that the single extractions, which have been consistently developed in various study fields until recently, can be divided into several groups. It also indicates that applying all single extractions are wasteful when assessing the heavy metals contamination in soil. Descriptive multivariate regression models based on physical-chemical characteristics of soil and extracted heavy metals by single extraction method were constructed for predicting heavy metals uptake into lettuce. Preliminary cross validation with internal datasets obtained from experiments resulted in reasonably good fits between predicted and observed concentrations. Rather than routinely include a total concentration in soils or plant uptake of heavy metals in soil pollution assessment, heavy metal uptake could preliminarily be estimated based on general soil characteristics. These models can play a valuable role as a preliminary assessment tool for evaluation of soils potentially contaminated with heavy metals. Based on the predicted heavy metals uptake into plants, a new method of soil contamination assessment was proposed. Criteria values for heavy metals uptake into plant predicted by regression analysis should be presented of an appropriate level to accomplish this, so that method of standardizing the criteria value using statistical techniques applied to determine the detection limits of instrumental analysis was proposed. Based on the results of this study, single extractions could predict the heavy metals uptake into plants. In addition, it was confirmed that a new method for evaluating the heavy metals contamination of the soil could be proposed based on the heavy metals uptake into plants.
