In this study, low loading Pt and non-precious Ni-based catalysts were fabricated by electrodeposition for hydrogen evolution in acidic solution. In the case of Pt catalysts, the loading of Pt can be precisely controlled from 0.03 to 271 μg/cm2 using self-terminated Pt electrodeposition. Half-cell for HER and single cell performance evaluations were found to saturate at Pt loadings higher than 21 μg/cm2. As a result of single cell performance evaluation, the current density divided by Pt mass at 1.9 Vcell was about 16 times higher than that of other PEMWE using Pt cathode. In the case of non-precious Ni-based catalysts, NiP, NiW/Cu NW and NiRu catalysts with various compositions were prepared using electrodeposition. As the results of the performance evaluation of the half-cell for HER, the performances were excellent with 35, 56 and 105 mV of overpotential at -10 mA/cm2 in the composition of Ni98.1Ru1.9, Ni96W4/Cu NW and Ni78P22 respectively. Through the material analysis such as FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS and electrochemical analysis of the prepared catalysts, we identified the factors that influenced the high performance. In addition, the Ni78P22, Ni96W4/Cu NW and Ni98.1Ru1.9 catalysts were applied to the cathode of PEMWE for evaluating the single cell performance. As a result, the current densities of 1.31, 1.79 and 2.63 A/cm2 at 2.0 Vcell, respectively, were obtained and shown to be superior to that of other PEMWE using non-Pt as a cathode.
