This thesis researched identified or presumed causes of 23 ESS fire accidents in South Korea so far and analyzed alarms issued in the ESS fires from the perspective of component part or system to estimate causes of failure in terms of each possible part or system. Moreover, based on the functional ESS block diagram, the component parts were classified and top 10% risk factors were identified by FMEA. To evaluate system stability, failure rate and basic event were found based on IEEE Std. and RIAC (Reliability assessment center), and number of defects was drawn up to examine potential causes of failure. Detector’s operating time and evacuation time were analyzed depending upon the existence of partitions between ESS battery racks in order to find the optimal design method to prevent ESS fire spreading. Finally, the thesispresented how to apply to the site safety devices and their installation (environmental proposition). To investigate the causes of ESS fire, the causes of 23 fire accidents that have occurred so far were examined according to purpose of use, type of accident, installation location, building type, operating period and battery manufacturer. With respect to the purpose of use, 17 of the accidents were about the purpose of using in connection with sunlight or wind power. In terms of accident type, 14 cases were fires during the standby for power generation after completing recharging. Fourteen of the cases took place in mountain areas in terms of installation location. In building type, 15 fires broke out in prefabricated panel structures. In terms of operating period, 16 fires took place in 1 year or under, accounting for the largest part among the fires. Of the 23 fire accidents, 12 cases took place in batteries made by a certain manufacturer, accounting for over 50%. Moreover, 10 out of the 23 fires seem to have been caused by BMS parts such as battery, Battery module and BCU. Based on the functional ESS block diagram, practically estimated fire causes were identified; and, based on IEEE Std. and RIAC, risk priority of component parts and failure and fire accident probability were analyzed by FMEA and FTA. Fire and evacuation simulation was utilized to examine smoke flow time and evacuation time depending upon the existence of partitions between battery racks in the event of an ESS fire accident based on the actual case of in-house installation. The finding indicates it is more effective to secure evacuation time to separate battery racks and install partitions between them as it delays smoke diffusion. Finally, to prevent ESS fires, this thesis presented a method and suggestions.
