The companion effect refers to physical and psychological benefits that humans receive from animals. There have been few studies on the effects of companion animals in Korea, and considering the recent generalization of life with companion animals and the changes perceptions of the companion animals in Korea, companion animals related studies are needed. Also, many hypotheses are currently proposed for the mechanism of the companion animals effect. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the companion animals effect, and to examine the mechanism of companion animals effects based on the social support hypothesis. Total of 632 community based sample adults over 19 years of age were measured using the Human-Animal Interaction Scale(HAIS), Multidimensional Scale Perceived Social Support(MSPSS), Korean Resilience Questionnaire-53(KRQ-53), and Perceived Stress Scale(PSS). First, groups were divided into a high companion animal interaction group, a low companion animal interaction group, and a non-owners group. Then, we confirmed whether there were a significant difference in companion animal interaction, perceived companion animals social support and resilience between the three groups. Next, among the owners, we identified the relationship between companion animal interaction, perceived companion animals social support and resilience. We also examined mediating effect of perceived companion animals social support in the relationship between interaction with companion animals and resilience. As a result of the group comparison, the high interaction group had a higher level of perceived companion social support and resilience than the non-owner group. The low interaction group had a higher level of perceived companion social support than non-owner group, however, the level of resilience was the lowest. In the group of owners, the interaction with companion animals, perceived companion animals social support, and resilience were all found to be significantly correlated and showed that the perceived companion animals social support mediated the relationship between interaction with companion animals and resilience. The findings of the study increased the possibility of generalization of companion animal effects, and suggest that intervention or programs that may enhance the interaction with companion animals or perceived companion animals social support, may help increase resilience.
