The purpose of this research is to evaluate the types of mental toughness recognized in martial arts athletes and to verify its impact on their performance. Also, as mental toughness is known to play an important role in the construction and execution of the athletes’ performance strategy, the study evaluates how performance strategy serves as a mediator variable in the process of psychological strength affecting their performance. Subjects were chosen from athletes registered in Korea Kyeok Too Ki Association (KTK), ROAD FC, AFC, and MAX FC. Since collecting random sample data was deemed difficult considering the characteristics of the subjects, purposeful sampling was used to collect data to fit the purpose of the research. Data from a total of 322 athletes was used for analysis. The subjects were categorized by their affiliated organizations, experience, athlete level (professional, amateur). Collected data was analyzed using SPSS Package (ver. 23.0). Basic statistics (frequency analysis, correlation analysis, descriptive statistics) were obtained from the evaluation of mental toughness, performance strategy, and perceived performance according to demographical variability, and an exploratory factor analysis was done to validate the structure of the instrument of the study. The Cronbach’ α value was calculated to look at the internal consistency in question. A co-relation analysis was used to identify the correlation between the test variables. To measure the differences between test variables by category, one-way ANOVA was conducted in case of a single factor and one-way MANOVA for variables including subfactors. Post hoc analysis used Scheffe’s method and statistical level of significance α at 0.05. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the effects of psychological strength with performance strategy as a medium, and AMOS (ver. 23.0) was used to identify the structural relationship on how mental toughness affects strategy and performance, thereby verifying the causal relationship.
The results of this research are as follows:
First, psychological strength, sports performance strategy, and athletic performance demonstrated high levels in professional athletes with more experience and higher winning rates. Most subfactors exhibited significant differences in performance strategy; techniques that render positive impact on performance, such as talking to oneself, emotion control, autonomic action, goal setting, imagery, and relaxation, displayed a positive relationship, whereas negative thoughts and distraction exhibited a negative relationship. Perceived performance also showed an incline as experience increased. Organizations with high winning rates demonstrated high levels of mental toughness, and performance strategy as well as perceived performance increased proportionally. Moreover, distinct differences in test variables were detected between professionals and amateurs. Professional athletes showed higher levels of mental toughness, sports performance strategy, and perceived performance.
Secondly, mental toughness has a positive impact on athletic performance. The direct effect of mental toughness on performance was revealed to be statistically significant. Psychological strength in one’s spirit of challenge, emotion regulation, and confidence in one’s capabilities appeared to affect perceived performance. In addition, confidence was shown to have a positive relationship with winning rates. The basic model established by the causal relationship analysis as a course model between variables generated an inadequate level of fitness, but reference to the regression analysis and path coefficient of the course model determines that there is a positive relationship between psychological strength and athletic performance. However, additional examination of variables that measure athletic performance are necessary.
Thirdly, mental toughness uses performance strategy as a medium to pose positive effects on performance. The indirect effects of mental strength on performance mediated by strategy were verified through regression analysis and course analysis. Subfactors of sports performance strategy exhibited statistically significant predictive values on performance test variables, as well as yielded a high explanation quantity and statistically significant path coefficient. In other words, athletes achieve problem solving ability and psychological relaxation through training and experience of mental toughness and improve their performance confidence by managing their inherent mental state with stability. The improvement of performance confidence can be interpreted to have direct effects on performance.
