The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of parental perception of child’s digital devices use on his or her language development. In modern society, as the age of digital devices is gradually switching from the information age to the computer mobile age, young children are increasingly being exposed to digital devices. Therefore, it is necessary to study how the use of digital devices affects children, a sensitive period of language development. In addition, research on parents’ perception of children's use of digital devices is needed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide the correct guidance of digital device which is desirable for healthy child development. For this, the following research questions were set. Question 1. How are children using digital devices? Question 2. What is the parents' perception of digital devices? Question 3. How different is language development with children's use of digital devices? Question 4. How do parental perceptions of digital devices affect children's language development? For this study, a survey was conducted on 285 parents of children aged 1 and 2 who are attending in day care centers in Jeollanam-do. The questionnaire used by Lee Jung Lim, Do Nam Hee and Oh You Jeong (2013) was used to examine the digital usage of children. In this study, the usage status of TV, computer, and smart devices was investigated individually. However, the items were revised and supplemented to investigate the use status including all digital devices used by children. The tools used were parental awareness measures for digital devices and Sequenced Language Scale for Infants (SELSI). This test is answered by the mother, the main caregiver of the child. For data analysis, SPSS 25.0 was used to conduct mean and standard deviation, frequency and percentage, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The conclusions from this study are as follows. First, the percentage of the most used digital devices used by children were 56.8% of TVs, 27.7% of smartphones, and 9.5% of tablet PCs. The first time to use digital devices was 13 ~ 17 months. The most time was within 30 minutes. The most frequently used place was home with 62.8%, and 53.0% of them watched comics for the purpose of using digital devices. 42.1% of the children used it with their parent’s permission, and 61.4% of them used it with their parents. It appeared that parents of children had the highest level of control over the types and hours of use, with 36.1% responding that they always manage the type and time of use of digital device applications, frequently 23.4%, and occasionally 18.2%. 51.2% of the respondents answered that parents allow their children to use digital devices because their children are happy. Second, as a result of examining parents' perception of digital devices, parents perceived the educational value of digital devices low. They recognized that the digital devices would have a negative impact on their children's development, and they had an overall negative perception on their children’s use of them, but they perceived that their children used the digital devices in moderation. Third, as a result of examining the difference in language development according to the use of digital devices of infants, it appeared that the language development was higher when the first use of digital devices was late, and the language development was high when the daily use time of digital devices in infants was less than 30 minutes. In the case of using the digital device together, the language development was high when used with the parents, and the language development was high when the digital device applications and the use time were always managed. Fourth, as a result of examining the relationship between language development of child and parents’ perception of digital device use, there was a significant positive correlation between child’s language development and parent perception.
In other words, parents’ perception of the use of digital devices had a significant relationship with child’s language development. Therefore, parents' perception of the use of digital devices affects the child’s acceptance language, expression language, and overall language altogether. As a result of this study, the differences in language development according to the use of digital devices and the parents' perception of the use of digital devices have a significant effect on the language development of child. These findings suggest that parents of child should be aware that child is very sensitive to language development during infancy and should not use digital devices as a means of convenient parenting. In addition, by providing parents with the proper guidance on digital devices, parents should be educated to improve their parenting attitude.
