The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of obesity-associated oxidative stress on skin aging among Korean middle-aged women. A total of 56 subjects were divided into 2 groups: Normal group; pre-menopausal women whose ages were over 40 and BMI between 18.5 and 23, Obese group; pre-menopausal women whose ages and BMI were over 40 and 23, respectively. Basic health characteristics, total anti-oxidative capacity and the systematic oxidative stress level by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC) and serum advanced glycation end-products(AGEs), respectively, and the physiological parameters of skin aging including the stratum corneum hydration(SCH), transepidermal water loss(TEWL), and skin elasticity were measured. Serum AGEs levels were significantly higher in obese group (p<0.05) while skin elasticity was significantly lower (p<0.05) than the normal group. Correlation analyses revealed that BMI negatively correlated with SCH (p<0.05) and positively correlated with TEWL (p<0.01). ORAC positively correlated with SCH and Skin Elasticity (p<0.05)) while AGEs negatively correlated with SCH (p<0.05) and Skin Elasticity (p<0.01). To determine the effect of obesity on skin aging, a linear regression analysis was performed. BMI was a significant factor affecting to TEWL (p<0.05) while AGEs was a factor to decrease the skin elasticity (p<0.05). These findings suggest that oxidative stress induced by obesity may deteriorate skin aging in Korean middle-aged women; thereby, staying in normal weight and oxidative stress care are recommended to maintain normal skin physiology during middle-age.
