The objective of this study was to identify the characteristics of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during the dry-cleaning drying process of small laundry facilities (non-industrial facilities with a washing capacity of <30 kg) among the industrial VOCs using organic solvents. An environmental impact assessment of the laundry VOCs was also conducted. The experiments to achieve the objectives of this study included on-site surveys, analysis of petroleum-based laundry organic solvents, actual small dry-cleaning process evaluation, odor contribution evaluation, photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), and secondary organic aerosol formation. Furthermore, the contribution of the secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAP) was evaluated. Specifically, in the on-site surveys of the small-scale household laundry facilities, an average of two dry-cleaning processes were conducted per laundry facility, processing 10 kg of laundry. These comprised the activity data for estimating the emission factor of the laundry VOCs. The volatile carbon count of 96.92% of the petroleum-based laundry solvents used in the small dry-cleaning facilities was on average 8 to 11 carbon atoms, and the highest carbon number was found to be 10. The VOCs emitted during the dry-cleaning drying process were released as gases along with water vapor, and the volume of gas produced was found to be affected by the drying time. The total gas generation was 70.5 ± 6.8 m3/cycle when 3 kg of cotton laundry was dried for 40 min. The TVOC(Total volatile organic compounds) analysis of the dryer emissions revealed that the TVOC concentrations and emissions were released simultaneously when the dryer was operating, initially gradually increasing and then decreasing after reaching the highest concentration in 8 min. In addition, the generation of the TVOCs increased proportionally with the amount of the laundry. The TVOC production was 0.64 ± 0.04 kg/cycle under the conditions of drying 3 kg of cotton laundry for 40 min. From the analysis of the VOCs discharged from the dry-cleaning drying process, totally 36 VOCs were detected, and a quantitative analysis was conducted. The concentrations of the VOCs discharged under the conditions of drying 3 kg of cotton fiber laundry for 40 min were 5785.40 ppb, 7055.15 ppb, 11341.85 ppb, 15361.89 ppb, and 49834.07 ppb for drying times of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 18 min, respectively. Acetone, methylene chloride, hexane, nonane, decane, and n-undecane were continuously released at high concentrations. It was considered that the emission factor of the laundry VOCs was based on the amount of the treated laundry, and from the dry-cleaning operation conditions and VOC emission characteristics, it was derived to be 0.21 kg VOCs/kg laundry. The odor contribution analysis was conducted to evaluate the environmental impact of the laundry VOCs. The VOC concentrations and odor emission trends were slightly different, with a total odor concentration index (SOQ) of up to 151 at 12 min after the dryer operation. The compounds with high odor contributions were acrolein, ethylbenzene, hexane, acetone, decane, and styrene. The odor contributions of acrolein and ethylbenzene were 32.28% and 13.47%, respectively. The POCP-weighted emission analysis of the laundry VOCs revealed that the annual POCP-weighted emission per cleaner was 0.147 (ton). Decane, nonane, n-undecane, and hexane were the highest contributors to ozone generation, and decane and nonane accounted for approximately 54% of the emissions at high concentrations. According to the SOAP-weighted emission analysis of the laundry VOCs, the annual SOAP-weighted emission per cleaner was 0.024 (ton). The materials with high SOA generation contributions were in the order of: n-undecane, decane, n-dodecane, toluene, and nonane. Among them, n-undecane and decane accounted for 75.22% of the total contribution.
