Title : Analysis of total nitrogen removal and economical efficiency at wastewater treatment facility by using waste alcohol as organic carbon source
Wastewater treatment plants with low concentrations of organic matter in the influent and high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) need to supply external carbon sources for nitrogen removal. Existing carbon sources, such as methanol, which have been previously used, can be economically burdened in the operation of the plant, due to excessive treatment costs when continuously injected into the treatment process. Therefore, a plan to utilize organic wastes such as food waste effluent, desorption liquid and waste alcohol as an alternative external carbon source should be devised. In this study, we examined the feasibility of using waste alcohol as a substitute for methanol used as external carbon source for wastewater treatment. The performance of the removal of pollutants (organic, nitrogen, suspended solids and phosphorus) was evaluated through the field application experiment of alternative carbon source for MLE wastewater treatment facility located in the highway rest area, and the economic and environmental effects of organic waste reuse were evaluated. The average removal rate of BOD5 was 99.6% after application of waste alcohol, which was about 2% higher than before treatment. In the previous MLE process, the nitrification mechanism was stable, but the TN removal rate was 16.3%, due to the low nitrogen nitrate treatment efficiency. The MLE process using waste alcohol as an organic carbon source showed stable treatment efficiency in terms of nitrogen removal. The TN removal efficiency improved from 16.3% to 82.2% before and after the application of waste alcohol. The average removal efficiency of NH3-N was 98.5%. The removal efficiency of SS and TP were high regardless of waste alcohol injection (SS: 90.4~ 99.6%, TP: 97.9~99.9%). In addition, when the waste alcohol is replaced with an external carbon source instead of methanol, it is estimated that the annual operating cost is reduced by about 95.3% and the greenhouse gas(CO2) emission is reduced by 58.44 tons.
