Today, the Korean Church is in the midst of the extreme dualism of the act-based belief, which is based on the theological absence of the imputation of Christ's righteousness, the legalism biased toward excessive justification, and the meritism biased toward false sanctification.
In this article, the author examines the doctrine of the imputation of the righteousness of Christ, the Mediator that plays a central and pivotal role in Reformed Theology. The imputation of Christ's righteousness inspected in Christ's prsonality and ministry is that the Christ, the substance and essence of the covenant , has accomplished for the saints through His theanthropical hypostatic union.
The essence of the Reformed doctrine of imputatio iustitiae is that the active and passive obedience of the Mediator Christ through His vicarious atonement becomes, as it is, our practical merit when it is imputed to us by Grace though faith. Calvin emphasizes that the effect of Christ's vicarious atonement is imputed to the saints practically and objectively through the mysterious union with Christ in the work of the Holy Spirit.
The doctrine of the imputation of righteousness of the Mediator Christ has been steadily maintained from Augustine, Calvin, and Turretin to Heppe, Bavink, and Hodges within Orthodox Reformed theology with consistent connection and without alteration concerning its core substance.
This article examines the doctrine of the imputation of the righteousness of Christ, the mediator, as follows.
First, concerning the finished righteousness imputed to the saints through Christ's theanthropical hypostatic union, the Christ is our Mediator and He, through active and passive obedience for us, suffered all sorts of hardships which sinner must undergo on the earth and fulfilled all the requirements and punishments of the law. And through the mysterious union of the Holy Spirit, He continues to impute the righteousness of Christ, that is, the acquired merit, to us.
Second, all righteousness accomplished through Christ's ongoing intercessory work is progressed through the Holy Spirit, and the work done by the Holy Spirit is continued through Christ's intercessory work, and the saints justified go through the process of sanctification. The justification that occurs in the process is also grace and the reward of the saint through the holy life of the saints, which gradually progresses from the stage of sanctification to the stage of glorification, is all grace through the mediation of Christ.
Third, Christ's righteousness in justification through the imputation of Christ's righteousness is given in the legal sense and yields justification. And “righteousness” given in the sanctification stage of the saints who is justified by the continuous intercession of Christ is seen in an ethical sense. The imputation of Christ's righteousness in this ethical sense lasts to the stage of the glorification of justified saints.
Fourth, justification and sanctification through the imputation of Christ's righteousness was not only redeemed from the legal authority of sin through the obedience of Jesus Christ, but also freed from the moral control of sin. Christ permits the doublel grace of justification and subjectively delivering Himself in sanctification which to unites with His people to in a spiritual and mystical manner, and this dual grace continues throughout the life of the saints. Therefore, those who believe in Christ are united with Christ, have righteousness and eternal life in Christ, and live a holy sanctified life with the imputation of the righteousness of Christ through more and more complete and sufficient union with Christ through the Holy Spirit.
Fifth, the chosen saints are sanctified by the imputation of Christ's righteousness, not by their own labors and efforts, and are justified by the merits of Christ to live holy lives in Christ.
Sixth, in terms of the saved saints' covenants, Calvin viewed the saint's faith as an absolute instrument that could not be denied or rejected. Babink saw faith as the saint's trust in God.
Concerning the saint's justification by faith, the author examines that the imputed righteousness of Christ, the instrument which justifies the saints is the rationale for saints' righteousness through the view of many Orthodox Reformed theologians, including Augustine and Calvin.
Today, evangelical lines or ethical moral acts are never the object or substitute for faith. The righteousness of Christ, the Mediator imputed to us, encompasses the obedience of his whole life through the merits of Christ's atonement, so that righteousness extends to the way of salvation of the saints. Christ accomplished the mediation in fulfillment of the Father's will in redemption, and continues to intercede for those who have chosen to impute the righteousness of all active and passive obedience by becoming “the mediator of the new covenant.” As darkness withdraws from the light, the Lord has made the saints forgiveness of sins through the imputation of righteousness through His ransom work. This imputation of righteousness led the saints to unite with and communicate with Christ. The saints also continue to be imputed by the righteousness of Christ through the continuous intercession of Christ. By receiving the righteousness of justification once the saint reaches the legal justification, and by being imputed continually by the righteousness of sanctification he proceeds to the way of glorification. The Holy Spirit imputes to the Saints the righteousness which has been accomplished in mysterious union with Christ. If the words Orthodox Reformism are not to be a doctrinal slogan anymore, it will be objectively proved that we are the descendants of our belief in orthodox Reformed theology through living the truth that flows through orthodox Reformed theology.
