Recently, reconstruction and remodeling projects using old buildings or a dwelling that has been suspended and left unattended have become a major form of construction in Korea's of construction due to the lack of new business units that can be built. Most of these buildings in urban centers have basement floors in areas that correspond to 80 to 90 percent of the land area and securing structural safety during removal of existing basement floors is a critical factor because of narrow space between adjacent lands. However, there is a lack of technical data related to the demolition of existing structures with basement floors that need to be built in parallel with the new frame. The method of removing underground floors, which is currently generally implemented in Korea, repeats the process of removing the frame from the bottom of the frame while filling the underground space of each floor with soil then after the new building's retaining wall and excavation work is being carried out. In this case many construction restrictions, time, and cost are required, and structural improvement measures are needed due to the failure to fill the underground space meticulously. Also, because most of the basement floors of existing buildings in urban centers are close to the land boundary, the removal of existing underground walls is very difficult, and there is a great danger to structural safety. Thus, it would be structurally safe and efficient if a construction method was developed that could be permanently utilized without removal of existing retaining walls. In this study, the exact material character(concrete strength, wall thickness, re-bar diameter, re-bar strength, etc.) and conditions(crack, carbonation, damage, etc.) are investigated on-site to utilize the existing frame. Afterwards, the safety of the existing structure is reviewed. In the future based on field conditions, technical data are proposed to apply the anticipated problems in the construction of urban centers and it also proposes ways to improve the inefficiency of conventional construction. First of all, in the event of demolition, the use of retaining walls according to supporting method “use existing retaining walls as a substitute for temporary retaining wall installations" is analyzed through a precision structural analysis. Then, it is to verify safety and derive the optimal support method for the site conditions. Second, the existing retaining walls are “used as a joint wall with the retaining walls of new buildings”, and safety is verified through a precision structural analysis. Therefore, it has been shown that there is an advantage in terms of space utilization as it is economical compared to the existing temporary soil membrane construction method, which allows air shrinkage due to minimized field-cast concrete and does not double construct the retaining wall and basement wall. In the future, this research data will be used as basic data for construction work with underground layers in urban areas and will be used as reference data for follow up research.
