Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present criteria for screening journals by investigating the characteristics of predatory journals in the medical and health fields on Beall’s List and by analyzing both Korean institutional researchers’2018 participation in these journals and the current status of the journals. Methods: To characterize predatory journals, 180 journals in the medical and health sciences were selected using keywords from Beall's 1,289 standalone journals. The homepages of these 180 journals were accessed from January to July 2019 to quantify 10 characteristics, along with the number of Korean articles published in the selected journals in 2018. The 10 characteristics – working links on the journal’s homepage, ISSN, language, publishing country, publication year, editorial board, publication frequency, impact factors (IFs), index/citation, and database record status links - were analyzed by frequency analysis, as were the 2018 papers. Results: Predatory journal homepages have become more sophisticated and difficult to distinguish from traditional journal homepages. Link errors were found on 22 journals’ homepages (12.2%). Out of 180 journals, 101 journals (56.1%) were published in India, and 56 journals (31.1%) have a constant publication cycle and a uniform number of articles. The number of editors on the editorial board ranged from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 340, a considerable difference. The number of journals indexed in 7 databases (DOAJ, Embase, Medline, PMC, SCIE/SSCI, ESCI, and Scopus) has decreased from 38 in 2017 to 33 in 2018. The homepages of 42 journals have 11 fake IF logos, such as ICV, DRJI, GIF, and Infobase. In addition, 95 journals were indexed on Google Scholar. Comparing journals before and after 2012, differences in the increase of Indian journals and in the number of journals indexed in databases were statistically significant (p<0.05). The number of papers from Korean institutions published in these journals in 2018 was 257 papers in 16 journals, with 1,174 authors. A total of 31 papers (12.1%) from Korean institutions (96 authors, 8.2%) are listed in 8 journals not indexed in the databases. Conclusion: In selecting journals, verifying the journal title, URL, ISSN, publisher, country of publication, publication frequency, database listing, and accurate IF information is essential. Attention should be paid to journals with frequent website link errors and irregular or not uniform publication cycles, as well as those with fake IFs and too few or too many editors. Korean scholars who have high confidence in database-listed journals should pay attention to the fact that predatory journals continue to thrive and can be listed in databases.
