Purpose: This study proposes a quantification method to visualize the calcification with Magnetic Resonance Imaiging (MRI), and verifies the effectiveness of the calcification visualization using MRI through comparative and quantitative analysis with X-ray Computed Tomography (CT).
Materials and Methods: CT image, T1 weighted MR image, T2 MR weighted image, Gradient echo (GRE) T2* weighted MR image, Susceptibility Weighted MR Image (SWI), and Zero Echo Time (ZTE) MR image were obtained using ex-vivo bovine bone, phantom, and patient with calcification. The phantom used in this study consists of six circular vials with concentrations of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) (0.5 g/ml, 1.0 g/ml, 1.5 g/ml, and 2.0 g/ml). Vials with different concentrations were arranged diagonally to check the effect of possible nonuniformity due to the inhomogeneity of B1 and B0.
Results: As a result of the phantom experiment, the CT image showed a tendency to increase the signal uniformly with the concentration. ZTE images tended to decrease in signal with increasing concentration. In a linear regression model of the CT image and the ZTE image, as a result of correlation analysis between ZTE and CT images, the coefficient of determination was 0.9674 (p <0.001). GRE images did not change at CaCO3 concentrations above 1.5 g/ml. As a result of correlation analysis between GRE T2* image and CT, the coefficient of determination was 0.7177 (p <0.001). The SWI image showed a tendency to increase at concentrations above 1.5 g/ml. As a result of correlation analysis between SWI image and CT, the coefficient of determination was 0.6091 (p <0.001). T1-weighted images showed a tendency to increase at concentrations above 1.5g/mL after a constant decrease in signal with concentration. As a result of correlation analysis between T1-weighted images and CT, the coefficient of determination was 0.002124 (p <0.8307). T2-weighted images showed a constant decrease in signal with concentration. As a result of correlation analysis T2-weighted images, the coefficient of determination was 0.7434 (p <0.001). As a result of animal bone experiment, the ZTE linear regression model with the same position ROI as the CT image showed y = 2043.9552 + -0.3173x and the coefficient of determination was 0.8748 (p <0.0196). The linear regression model of GRE T2* was y = 849.3827 + -0.4953x and the coefficient of determination was 0.3133 (p <0.3265). The linear regression model of SWI was y = 793.2637 + -0.06246x and the coefficient of determination was 0.2634 (p <0.3765). The linear regression model of the T1-weighted image was y = 1483.7843 + -0.2009x and the coefficient of determination was 0.7414 (p <0.0609). The linear regression model of the T2-weighted image is y = 1178.4471 + -0.2205x and the crystal coefficient is 0.5265 (p <0.1653).
CONCLUSIONS: The MRI ZTE technique is highly correlated with CT imaging and can be used to quantify the high density calcification. MRI ZTE test for bone and calcification can reduce the unnecessary additional examination of CT and reduce the dose of patients. Key word: Calcification, Zero TE (ZTE: Zero Echo Time), X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT)
