The novel and the movie, 『Farewell My Concubine』 originally took the title of 『Farewell My Concubine』 which is a masterpiece of traditional Beijing opera, but each plot structure is different. In the contents of Beijing opera, 『Farewell My Concubine』, when Xiang Yu was finally surrounded by the enemy of Liu Bang and isolated with Sa-Myeon-Cho-Ga (A song of the Qing Dynasty that can be heard from all sides, which means being surrounded by the enemies or falling into isolation that no one can help)while Cho-Pae-Wang, Xiang Yu and Han King, Liu Bang have been competing for the supremacy of China, Xiang Yu’s lover, Uhui, swore love and committed herself by suicide for Xiang Yu who couldn't decide to escape because of her. But in the novels and movies, the song parts with very high artistic values in the play were extracted and used from the contents of Beijing opera 『Farewell My Concubine』 as the device to obtain the dramatic effect of the development of the plots. Since then, the novels and movies, 『Farewell My Concubine』 has reflected the nationality, politicality, culturality and sociality through the stories spanning the half a century and has been well received by the readers and audiences by extending it to the expression of the individual's sexual identity and the dissolution of traditional ideas and subsequently drawing the social problems worth researching. In particular, 『Farewell My Concubine』, which has already been highly recognized for its literary character in the novel, has been reorganized into a movie that has been perfected by successful casting, perfect performance of the actors, richer plots and brilliant videos and music through the adaptation of the artist and director and was finally reborn as a mature film with high perfection. This study focuses on comparing and analyzing Li bihua's original novel and Chen Kaige’s movie, 『Farewell My Concubine』 from the comparative literature perspectives based on previous researches. To this end, the creating processes and backgrounds of the novels and films were first examined from the historical examination of 『Farewell My Concubine』, and subsequently, the characteristics of Li bihua’s original novels and the features reflected in Chen Kaige's film, 『Farewell My Concubine』 adapting the original novel were individually written and comparatively analyzed. Specifically, the characteristics of the novel, 『Farewell My Concubine』 were analyzed by dividing the unconventional subject consciousness, unique narrative techniques, subjective female consciousness and human nature exploration, and the characteristics of the movie 『Farewell My Concubine』 were separately studied by dividing into the personalization of the figures, dissolution of traditional ideas and the reflection of political and social contradictions and conflicts. Particularly through the analysis of social background and characters, this study analyzed in-depth the recognition and gender identity of homosexuality, social conflict and human nature problems reflected in the society at that time. Comparing the novels and movies based on this analysis, this study explored in detail the artistic expression in the novel 『Farewell My Concubine』, Li bihua’s feminine perspective and the sociality, humanity and artistry of the characters who appear through the adaptation by Chen Kaige. In particular for 『Farewell My Concubine』, the original novel by Li bi hua was rewritten to Chen Kaige's movie and subsequently revised and published by Li bi hua. This study compares the narrative structures and adaptation aspects of the three types of original novel-adapted movie scripts-revised novel, and examines the characteristics of the dual adaptation reflected in the process and the liberation and conscious world of Li bihua and Chen Kaige.
