Purpose: The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness tourism as "travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one's personal well-being". Wellness tourism is one of the most promising niche markets within the health tourism field. This study's fundamental aim is twofold; first, this study investigates factors that motivate wellness travelers, to create a wellness tourist motivation scale (WTMS); and, second, It investigates the relationship between wellness tourism and three key indicators: Quality of Life (QOL), Subjective Well-being (SWB), and Revisit Intention (RI). Qualitative Design: Data from a 2019 industry survey by the WTA (2019) with the open-ended research question "What is your motivation for a wellness holiday/vacation?" was analyzed for motivational factors by computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (Quirkos). Findings: From an analysis of 2,450 responses the following seven motivational factors emerged: Movement & Fitness, Healthy Food & Diet, Meditation & Mindfulness, Rest & Relaxation, Learning about Wellness, Self-Care, and Nature & Disconnect. Wellness tourism industry experts and tourism scholars assisted in creating survey items representing the seven emergent themes from the data. A Wellness Tourist Motivation Scale (WTMS) was synthesized with 28 questions (four questions per factor). Quantitative Hypothesis: From the 28 questions (WTMS), additional variables were added to measure the Quality of Life (QOL), Subjective Well-being (SWB), and Revisit Intention (RI). We hypothesized the following; H1- Movement & Fitness, Healthy Food & Diet, Meditation & Mindfulness, Rest & Relaxation, Learning about Wellness, Self-Care, and Nature & Disconnect will affect QOL. H2 - Movement & Fitness, Healthy Food & Diet, Meditation & Mindfulness, Rest & Relaxation, Learning about Wellness, Self-Care, and Nature & Disconnect will affect SWB. H3 - QOL will affect RI H4 - SWB will affect RI Findings: H1- Several factors were found to have a significant effect on satisfaction, including 'Movement & Fitness,' 'Nature & Disconnect,' and 'Self-Care,’ However, while 'Movement & Fitness' had a positive effect, 'Nature & Disconnect' and ‘Self-Care' had a negative effect. Therefore, Hypothesis 1 was partially adopted. For H-2, it was found that the order of ‘Meditation & Mindfulness', ‘Movement & Fitness', ‘Nature & Disconnect', and ‘Self-Care' affect SWB. As a result, Hypothesis 2 was partially adopted. H-3 was dismissed as QOL was found to have no significant effect on RI; however, H-4 was found to have a significant influence on RI, and Hypothesis 4 was adopted. Research Implications: Results might be affected by the social consequences of COVID-19, as the survey was taken in April 2020. The WTMS was refined through the elimination of the 'Healthy Food & Diet' and 'Learning & Wellness' factors due to low factor loading and cross-loading issues. A refined WTMS with five factors and ten items remains. Shorter surveys decrease the response burden and could be more useful as a survey instrument for future wellness tourism research. Practical Implications: With the unique and unprecedented pandemic (COVID-19) that we are currently experiencing, wellness has been catapulted to the forefront of global focus. Populations, more than ever before, are becoming more informed and educated about their health. As a result, most future tourism experiences will have some wellness components. In the near future, South Korea will benefit as a result of its robust national healthcare infrastructure, trusted first-rate medical facilities, and a proven track record in managing pandemics.
